How do you feel about refurbished drives

Hi, i was shopping around today and i found some really awesome deals on newegg for internal hard drives but some of them are seagate refurbished drives. Would you trust them as much as a new drive and would you buy one if it was a great deal. Im kind of 50/50 right now, i like seagate but i might go with WD since its new.

I would rather pay for a new drive with a longer warranty than take a chance on a refurb with a much shorter warranty.

I like the WD Black as they still have a 5 year warranty.

I myself have purchased many of them,,, most of them are "New refurbished" some "Used Refurbished" of course the "New" ones technically is a drive someone probably purchased screwed up their install couldn't get it working and then returned it, then they sent back to Seagate and Seagate ran all their tests and wiped the slate clean and then sold as refurbished,,, to me anything refurbished should be as good as or better than "new" because why you ask?? well because its been gone over and tested for Quality a second time and if the "refurbishers" do their job right I think you get just as good if not better quality than "New"

"Used refurbished" would obviously be an older dated drive/model that has been tested and wipe and re-sold, possibly from an offlease PC or something so it may have a lot of hours on it but tests out good.
I've purchased both,,, both in SSD and HDD drive's and so far only had one that wouldn't work out for me, I returned it found another one on the shelf and was back in good working order.

Most the stuff I do goes into used PC's for re-sale so how long they last I don't know but ive not yet had one come back bad nor heard of any issues.

Either way id say its worth taking a risk on if you have 30 or 90 days to return why not right?

Infact Im just now as I type this about to install w7u on a "Used" refurbed 80gb drive for an older system! Of course following tutorials (well memory) from what ive read here!!

I would avoid a refurbished drive. As the others have said, I would rather trust my data to a new drive with warranty than someone's old and formerly broken drive.

I've used a few but they all carried the same warranty as if new. One thing about refurbished is if an item has a serial number it is entered at the register database and in most cases cannot legally be sold again as new. Sometimes they are simply buyer rethinks/remorse in the return.

Seagates are pretty poor to start with. Refurbishing a poor drive is not going to make it any better. Best seem to be the drives from Japanese companies like Hitachi, Fujitsu, etc.

I would buy a refurbished SSD but not a HDD. Mechanical parts wear out.

No, not with a hard drive.

Replacing mechanical parts in a hard drive is VERY expensive, far more than the cost of a new drive. Such repairs can only be done in a special clean room by a trained technician using special tools and techniques. Due to the cost repairs are only done for the purposes of data recovery.

The so called refurbished drives are those that have been returned and tested OK. No repairs were done.

Why even think about a refurbish drive.
The cost difference between new and refurbish is minimal.

Thanks everyone for the great feedback, i do agree that refurbished have been put to live test and thats good, i think i will stick as suggested many times here to new with longer warranty.

Im running a hitachi sata right now as primary with a ide drive as the number 2 drive (its from an old pc and i could not see tossing it so i got an ide converter card). But its only 160gb so its time to replace it and let it go.

The plan is to get another sata for that slot and that way it can run off the existing factory additional plug and power rather than running it off a card like do with my ide.

Question, does it make a difference if my current sata is sata I or II or III and the kind i get for the drive 2. As long as my system will support I II or III then it dont matter right? I could run sata I as primary and sata III as secondary if i wanted to right?

it was a tossup between the WD and the hitachi but the deciding factor was that this is a 1TB plus im alreadying running a hitachi and i know it will work and just plug right in.

Usually the only difference is in the transfer speeds, may not notice much difference.

Not always. Often, they just clean it up, relable it, and resell it.
