How do you open a PWI File

Hello Forum,

After a lot of frustration.

I have finally decided to post an issue that I am having with opening .pwi files from an old Windows Mobile Phone.

I do not have the information on the phone anymore - I just have the actual folder from a sync. It contains .wav. .mid and .pwi files that I can not open.

I also can not seem to find a way to find the .zip application to compress information to upload what I mean so people can manipulate the data that I am trying to explain on this forum.

Thank you for choosing Microsoft Community. By the description, I understand that you are unable to open the pwi files on the computer.
The PWI files are basically the extension for notes on the windows phones. This can be accesses on Outlook notes after syncing the device to the Outlook application.
You may copy the PWI files to the phone PWI location by browsing and then sync with Outlook.
You may also search for 3rd party software’s which might help you in accessing the PWI files on the computer.

Several places mention opening PWI file using MS Word:

But you will only see text.

If text is all you want, then maybe you can open notepad then drag/drop a PWI onto the notepad window.

The WAV and MID files show to have a tiny file size in your screenshot. They are probably nothing more than a tone, like the ding you might hear if you make an error on a computer. If you really want to hear them, then you will probably need to install some codecs... maybe Download K-Lite Codec Pack 9.80 (Full) - FileHippo.com

Right click on a file and select send to > compressed folder

Access Convert PWI MSG file Windows Mobile 5 and 6

After installing multiple hex editors, file conv/viewers, the best method seems to be to run WM6 Emu: {OS: win7,10} microsoft likes to eat files, here is how you take them back!


1. Install WM EMU, then Images
2. Run DvcEmuManager.exe from: ~C:\Prg..\Microsoft Device Emu..\1.0
3. Start WM Device Cntr and pair as DMA
4. >DvcEmuMgn>Action>Cradle


.MSG files: Set to open with outlook, file opens in InkForm.exe. Paste body into outlook message {text field} and DB click to open in VLC {media.} Find temp file {C:\Users\Me\AppData\Local\Temp} and save.


.PWI files: Run WM6 Emu and paste file into device through Comp, as any paired device.

Alternatively, change extension .pwi to .wav and open w GoldWave app, select Proper bit rate + Hz {may need hex editor if the file has mixed TXT/GRX.}


Enjoy! Best to stay away from proprietary file types in the future, use OpenOffice, VLC, ETC
