how do you organize your playlists?

i'm having trouble finding ways to organize my music into different playlists, so i was wondering how other people organize theirs. i listen to mostly music with screaming (A Day To Remember, The Blackout, Scar Symmetry, etc) and different derivatives of rock (Lostprophets, Anberlin, AC/DC, The Who). my problem is that i have everything in one playlist and once i start listening to the heavy stuff, i don't want to listen to the lighter songs. and i have so much more heavy stuff that even if i start out with a few lighter ones, i end up listening to more heavy stuff. i tried separating it into heavy and light listening, but i'm not one to switch playlists just for a few songs. so are there any suggestions on how i can organize my music? it's starting to drive me crazy.

there's especially times in the morning when i first wake up that i don't feel like listening to the heavier songs. i had made a playlist specifically for morning listening, but then when i switched to my main playlist after waking up, i kept hearing repeats of the same songs i just listened to in the morning playlist. i hate listening to something i just listened to.

I don't do playlists. I have seen so many posts in the mp3 player-centric forums, where people get so stressed out over how to make playlists, etc., and I say don't bother with the aggravation.

My listening habits are perhaps different from other people. If I am at the computer, listening from it, then I generally go album by album. If I am using one of my three mp3 players, it's a little different.

The Samsung player has some of my favorite music on it, but it is primarily my podcast player....mainly used around the house, quite often during my workout, or when I am trying to wind down before bed.

The Sony player has the highest capacity, and quite often, especially when I am out and about, I have it on "shuffle all" of the 2,500-3,000 songs that are typically on it. SOmetimes though, I have a hankering for one particular band, and I'll just "shuffle artist". I like shuffle all because it keeps everything fresh....a song will pop up that I haven't heard in a while, and it will remind me I haven't listened to X artist in a while. Also, shuffle all is handy on the days I can't make up my mind.

I was just given a third player, a tiny little Sansa, and that is as close to playlisting as I do....I have a selection of music on that that I can set to shuffle all while I am at work, that most all the co-workers can tolerate..(if only they practiced the same consideration ).

Playlist's are very highly customizable in every need possible.. Why not create a new playlist to suite your needs?

Forgive me if I'm missing the point but I have every CD/tune I have ever bought stored on my hard-disk and I used to DJ.. Simply create a new playlist for that certain mood.

A example would be that on my 'Media' drive (lettered 'M' for ease ) I have folders like "M:\Singles" and "M:\Albums". each album has it's own playlist so I can play each album as expected but I also have "M:\Playlists" in which I have a playlist to suite each need.. Like "Chill-Out", "Hardcore", "Heavy-Metal" etc...

I dont use play lists. I have my music on Z:\music and then sorted into artist folders and then album/single folders.

Same here, can't be bothered with playlists.

No playlists for me. I keep all my music files in one folder. Organized them by music genre and albums.

You could use the Add To Queue function and then, if you're happy with a given listing, use Save As Playlist

I have several playlists set to play 200 songs in a row (shuffle turned off). I have them organized according to what I need them to do... Gaming, romance, general listening, etc..

while i dont use itunes, i think they have software built in that will create a playlist for you based on the music you have.
