Hi Forum! I hope I can give enough information to make the question clear.

I'm a student but I kinda work in the university as well. So everybody gets an account of his own to log in his email, espace etc. And we log on the computers of the university with our accounts too, the username is a bit different but the password is the same.

My problem is that most people like me have very limited rights with the OS, so from time to time, softwares like Java, Adobe pop up and request administrator account to update. I do not want to break any law here, but as my work actually needs many softwares to work, I recently has installed a portable Ubuntu on my pendrive, hoping I can get off from the handicapped OS.

Now when I boot up my pendrive with the computer, I find that it shows that the connection has been established with proper IP address etc (DHCP), but I actually have no internet access at all. Because my laptop needs to connect the campus wifi with my account info, I thought I might need to enter my account info somewhere, then I found that 802.1x thing where there're options for MD5, TLS, Tunneled TLS, PEAP(my laptop uses PEAP to connect compus wifi). However after I struggled with my account/username in all those boxes, I still failed to get me connected to the internet.

Can anyone tell me if it's gonna work at all?

Hi,

Unfortunately we can't really recommend a solution as we might unwittingly be subverting the rules put in place by your university. In this case, you should seek the help of your system administrator.

Regards,
Golden

I think my OS is isolated with the school's computer system, coz everything I do is within my pendrive, and also I want to use my own account info to log on... it's just I don't know where to put it.

The advice still remains as per Golden's reply: Please see your University network System Administrator. If s/he decides that it is OK for these programs to be installed and updated, then it is down to him or her. We cannot assist you in any way with trying to circumvent the policies and restrictions that they have placed on the internal network.

Chances are, your campus network uses 802.1x but there's so many different ways to set up 802.1x that you will need to ask your IT admin what settings to use.

Failing that, make friends with a computer science student....
