How does powerline networking work. Is it fast/reliable

i wonder how does powerline networking works. isit simply something like an extender? or does it send data through powerlines (i think <-- this is what is done)? but powerlines are not designed to send data so maybe it wont work well on all homes? maybe it wont be reliable? isit v slow also?

i think it maybe good if it provides faster speeds/reliability than wireless...

1) It does exactly that. Even though you home's wiring is used for electical distribution, it is still wiring, thus data can be transmitted as well.

2) It does provide better security as it is still a hard-wired connection. Speed depends upon the condition of the wiring in the house.

high speed, now have 85mbps, 200mbps, 500bps, also have wireless item.
reliable.
a good choice for extra network in home use.

I'll defer to the other poster in regards to powerline networking, because I have no personal experience with it. I opted to go with a WiFi network via my router instead, yet I would suggest that you use the forum's search function, using the keyword "powerline", where you will find ~ 22 previous threads regarding the subject. Whether they answer your question or not, they should be helpful otherwise.

I've avoided it at all costs because I have yet to see anyone (except on this forum) claim that it works well or reliably. I prefer to use hardware that's designed for a specific purpose.

I am currently using it here in the UK.

Connection from my router by cable into Solwise 200mbps Homeplug Ethernet adaptor which is plugged into the mains. Another Solwise adaptor in living room connected to Freesat box which is connected to HD TV.

These are both "pass through" adaptors (you can connect your normal electrical bits and pieces through them).

They work perfectly. Wireless doesn't.

TrendNet TPL-306E2K work ok. No as fast as I like but faster then wifi and fast enough to stream movies on my tv which is what I was trying to do.
PS included software wasn't helpful. Worked best when I just plugged everything in and pushed CONNECT on my tv.

Im using netcomm 200mbps for some time on my network between a pvr/media player and my pc. It enabled me to connect via lan in a situation where running cable would have been very expensive. Sure its a let down on speed compared to the rest of my gigabit lan, but hey, its miles faster than wireless, and perfectly acceptable, and actually works quite well.

I am writing this from Australia, and I dont know if this applies anywhere else in the world, but here we have 3 phase power, and a word of warning that EOP wont work across phases.
