Hi All,

I'd like to hook-up my computer to TV. I used an HDMI 30 foot cable from my computer to the TV and it didn't work. Cable is fine. How far can usually go?

A$U$ CM#68-70-CA-3AA Desktop PC Intel Core i7 3770(3.40GHz) 16GB DDR3 2TB HDD, NVIDIA GeForce, GT630 2GB, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit

I can only assume that there is not enough power in my GeForce630 to send data through to the TV at 30 feet.

Alternative solution?

Thanks, katy:D

Hi Katy,

I'm using a 45ft cable connecting a blu ray player to a projector, no issues whatsoever. I tried it with my pc for gaming through the projector, again no issues.
Quality of cable, gauge, shielding and filtering have a big impact.
A high quality HDMI certified 30 foot cable can get expensive, I know mine did, and you have to buy it without knowing if it is going to work, so it is a bit of a gamble.
I would recommend an active HDMI signal booster, which will probably be cheaper than the new cable, and has very high chances of working with the cable you already have.
There are several options available on Newegg.

Hope this helps,

J

Hi Bungee,

The 30 foot HDMI was a very good quality. But it may need a boost as you have mentioned.

What if I were to forego the HDMI wire (distance) and use something like: Western Digital WD TV Live Streaming Media Player - Wireless.

Many thanks, katy:D

Stupid question, but was the TV set to the correct HDMI input? And yes the card has enough power for the HDMI connection, as that component of the card is the same whether the card is low end or high end.

Like Bungee above I am also running a longer length with no problems. In my case it is a 25' and a 10' joined together with a female-to-female connector instead of a sigle cable, and it just works.

Hi Stormy,

:D Yes, it was. I checked it many times. Also used different display settings and nothing happened.

My Graphic cards has three outputs: VGA, HDMI, DVI.

The HDMI cable worked only four feet away from the TV but not 25-30 feet away.

How would I do it wirelessly?

Thanks, katy;)

Hi Stormy,

I connected by LCG Monitor with the VGA cable leaving the other two ports free to use for the TV. In particular, the HDMI cable.

The power supply for my new computer is only at 300W. Do you think that might be the problem?

Power supply isn't the problem. The problem is that you are using the VGA connection on the card, which shares the output with the HDMI connection making that you can only use one or the other at one time.

One bit of good news though, from looking at the specs for your Asus monitor,

ASUS - - ASUS VE248Q

it should have come with a HDMI to DVI cable, which you can use to connect to the monitor's HDMI port and the video card's DVI port, which will then make the HDMI port on the card available for your TV.

Easy one that.

Next Question Please. !!:p

Hi Stormy, Razor and Jimbo,

Power supply isn't the problem. The problem is that you are using the VGA connection on the card, which shares the output with the HDMI connection making that you can only use one or the other at one time.

Without sounding daft, I thought the VGA connection was completely separate from the HDMI and DVI-D ports on the graphics card. Three separate slots at the back of the tower/graphic card.

One bit of good news though, from looking at the specs for your Asus monitor,
it should have come with a HDMI to DVI cable, which you can use to connect to the monitor's HDMI port and the video card's DVI port, which will then make the HDMI port on the card available for your TV.

I usually hook up my monitor using the HDMI to DVI slot. Changed it in order to use the HDMI to TV.

Many thanks, katy:D

Almost but not quite. That is the case on the higher up Nvidia cards that support running Nvidia Surround, three monitors together in an extra wide screen configuration,

3D Surround Technology

Unfortunately your card isn't one of those and as a result only has two RAMDAC's on it,

RAMDAC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

one for the DVI port, and one for both the VGA and HDMI port; hence why you can only use one of the VGA or HDMI ports at a time.

Morning AddRAM,

Thanks again for the excellent article. Read it late last night. I just hope all the corners I have to go around will not affect the quality of the picture. Fingers crossed!

This morning I found a post that was answered by Kari. Excellent job of explaining how to connect your TV to a desktop and the display monitor set-up.

Truly appreciate all the wonderful support here at The Seven Forums.;)
