I used my Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive to load OSX because a lot of PC drives can't read/boot from the OSX disc.

Basically you run an app that prepares the hard drive then you swap from the bootloader CD to the OSX CD and then it installs OSX.
After OSX is installed, you then reboot with the bootloader app and it makes OSX bootable.

The mini 9 was a very popular netbook to run OSX so there are a lot of tools available to make install painless.

o i may have to go get a mac then if i wan the osi dont know hwo to do all of that with my xbox better yet i have heard of how to make a hackin tosh if i was to get osx or in this care you have it how do you choose what os you want to boot up when you start up your pc

pparks, Just curious - what makes you think it would be slow. I run Ubuntu in Virtual Box and with most applications it is actually faster than my native Win7 - and I gave vBox only 1GB of RAM. Only Firefox is slow. But I solved that with Chrome and that is lightning fast.

OSX is unbelievably slow in a virtual environment. I know from experience in trying to use it myself and help people get it working. Just getting OSX running on a regular PC is a feat in and of itself (requires specific hardware, usually hacked kernels and tons of tinkering)...trying to run it with the hardware layer abstraction that you get with a virtual machine makes it infinitely worse.

Other operating systems, like Windows and Linux run beautifully in a virtual environment.


Hackintosh is an art form. It's like overclocking. It's very, very specific. As Zepher points out, the Dell Mini 9 was very popular as this hardware combination simply worked. However, very few netbooks will experience similar results.

Trust me, I learned from experience. I built a new PC about 18 months ago with the intention of running a hackintosh. Had to get very specific motherboards, video cards, processors and the like. Then, purchased a $200 module called an EFI-X to allow me to run my retail Purchased copy of OSX Leopard (around $129) as my installer. After about 2 weeks of tinkering, got it working. After 2-3 weeks of using OSX...which mostly worked...I simply lost interest as it wasn't very exciting and didn't provide me with anything that I couldn't do in Windows. A month later, I removed the EFI-X chip, tossed my OSX installer into a bin and regretted the time and nearly $350 that I spent trying to make this work. Worst computer investment EVER.

pparks, thank you for the experience report. I guess it is not worth tinkering with it. I was just curious about Snow Leopard and for a $29 license I thought it would be fun to play with it.
As I understand, the reason why it does not run very well in vBox is because there are no Guest Additions for it. I can see the politics between Oracle and Apple on that one given that Apple insists on bundeling their OS (in the EULA) with their outrageously overpriced hardware. I wonder though how they can get away with that.
