How long before Microsoft Windows XP disappears?

Windows XP is in decline, on Netmarketshare's monthly numbers, but can we project how much longer it will stick around? It may be longer than you think

Netmarketshare's monthly updates on the state of the operating system and browser markets are useful not because the numbers are accurate — they clearly have a margin of error — but because they show trends. The most obvious trend at the moment is the decline of Microsoft's ancient Windows XP. This enables us to project how long it will be before Windows XP finally disappears, and you're welcome to have a go in the comments below.

The first question is, "What does 'disappear' mean?" There will clearly be a rump of Windows XP users for a long time. There are, after all, still a few people using Windows 98 (0.01 percent) and Windows 2000 (0.03 percent).

Hi there

Well I still have stuff that CAN'T be run on anything else - so my XP system will outlast W7 by a considerable margin -- I can STILL see myself using it until about 2020 (If I'm still around then) and if my old gear is still working. (I'm running XP on as a Virtual machine so there's no hurry for me to get rid of it).

People still like the VINYL records I cut for them (need XP for the hardware and software for cutting the old records) -- I can still make 78 RPM's ( 10" / 12") if people want them too as well as 45's and standard LP albums -- It's quite interesting hearing a modern RAPPER being played on a 78 on a Wind up antique Horn grampohone (like the old HMV machines!!) - and I really love using portable Minidisc recorders at gigs etc - nothing else comes close in making excellent recording on the go -- these devices will only work on XP too.

(ATRAC3 is the old SONY proprietary format - especially ATRAC3 lossless - only XP though can get the audio off the minidisc into FLAC / WAV / other formats which I can then use for cutting Vinyl etc.)

I have quite a bit of other gear which is too expensive to replace so my XP system lives on even though I'm running down my W7 system(s).

I don't need to replace my old Vinyl cutting hardware and software --irt would cost several THOUSAND dollars just on the hardware alone. So in my case XP still rules !!!!!.

Cheers
jimbo

I expect within the next five year the number of XP users will be negligible. Old hardware will break or become unusable and hopefully by then Microsoft will release a OS that people will want to use.

Trends

Given current trends, the Windows 8 series will vanish long before XP, assuming that W9 is any good.

OTOH, if MS insists on making W9 more annoying than Windows 8, XP may outlast both.

lol I love how they say only 0.01 use windows 98 >.> If the computer still works (and has software that I care to use) than I keep using it. So what percent do you think still use ms-dos. XD
To this day some dos games are still fun to play. And to this day I still play some of them. That feeling of control with the old text based os. I know that there are no viruses on this comp! XD. Of course the annual trying to recover that old floppy gets old.

Hi there
Perhaps as there's still such a thing on this Planet as a computer XP will be found on one somewhere.

The real answer should be perhaps "How Long is a piece of String"

How long before Microsoft Windows XP disappears?
These questions have been asked so many times but never fear, I have the perfect answer. XP WILL NEVER DISAPPEAR.
There will always be people like me who like to hold on just because.

When I am 90 I will pull out my old xp and show it to my great grandchildren and say this children is what we used to play with. We didn't have holographic realities when I was your age. :geek:

500 years from now in some museum: This is what they used to call a "Personal Computer." This was before all our modern Borg implants and bionic limbs. Such historic devices currently auction for 5000 bars of gold pressed latnum for all you collectors out there.

Actually, I have some floppies around here somewhere. I should setup a box again. Virtual of course!

I am still running MS DOS 6.22 24/7 on one of my computers. It is just rock solid as there is little to go wrong. There are just some things that DOS is just good for. There are only 2 software applications on the planet like what I am running .. one runs in DOS and one in Windows. I have the source code for the DOS app .. and I will continue to make enhancements. The developer of the Windows app will never release his source code, so DOS it is.
