How long should Wiper take on a SSD?

i have a brand new 60GB OCZ Turbo with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit installed. i ran Wiper and it's taking forever to complete is this normal?

What's wiper? Do you mean Microsoft attachment Wiper or a 3rd party disk wiper product?

If the latter, it depends how secure the wipe is. For example writing over the entire drive with Zero's, then it takes hours, writing zero's, then ones, then zero's takes three times that. You see it is reading every tiny byte on the drive and there are 60 GIGAbytes. You may be able to see it reading or writing to new sectors or you may see an ongoing count that shows you that it's still working away. If it appears frozen then leave it for a couple of hours and come back.

I just ran mine on a 30 GB OCZ Vertex with 12 GB free and it took less than 5 seconds. Is that normal?

Actually you don't need wiper on Win7, Win7 has native TRIM support.
OCZ's wiper is for OS that don't have TRIM = XP

5 seconds, yep that's within range.
If you want to do it manually, download CCleaner > settings = secure deletion(slower) [Simple Overwrite(1 pass)] then check off your SSD below.

Click cleaner icon on left and on Windows tab scroll all the way to bottom and make sure (Wipe Free Space) is checked.

Run this once a week (this will also work on RAID drives, TRIM isn't supported yet on RAIDs)

Wiper is no longer needed. Thats more for G1 drives or drives that do not support TRIM. Most all current SSDs have firmware that supports TRIM.

For an OCZ drive, the only thing you may wish to do is have a copy of Sanitary Erase on hand.
In the even you need to restore a system Image, or want to do a clean instal, you can Sanitary Erase the drive 1st. But this would be the only time its needed.

Beyond that, Win7 will maintain the drive just fine w/its TRIM support.


Altough Ccleaner is a great app in general, I would not use its wiper on a SSD either.
It can actually hinder performance more than it helps in most cases.

Also, remember, Seq. Read & Write do not really mean anything in the grand scheme of things.
Especially for the OS, so I wouldn't worry to much about them.
4K write/read is far more important as well as access time.
