I am ripping the hair out of my head and screaming at my PC. Why can I not find a simple answer to this simple question on google?

I have posed this question in so many different forms, using so many different synonyms on google search that I have run out of words in the English language! The only thing I have not tried yet is spelling words backwards or putting them up side down:mad:

Could someone please tell me exactly how many Windows 7 PC's can be connected together in a homegroup?

Well... clearly I was a bit silly because I didn't use the word "limit" (and there I was saying that I had used all the words in the dictionary:o).

I thank you kindly for your response and solution to my query.

No Limit?

On paper maybe. I would rather think there is a limit. Hardware and software is not infinite.

Well, I think there is a limit. It would be the limitation of the network addressing. Something like 256^4 minus 1 or the like. Or as we say down here, "Bazillions"! :)

(256^4) - 1 = 4,294,967,295

Networking with windows 7

I have 12 computers networked with Windows 7 and it runs flawlessly so far. Interested to know what the maximum capacity is though before I need to get a 'true server'.

(256^4) - 1 = 4,294,967,295

That would be a mess of subnets, but it sounds like fun lets try it.

I though that windows 7 had a limited number of connections at a time (the higher the edition the more you simultaneous connections you can have). I though server was like this too but with a higher limit.

I am a volunteer "system administrator" for a 500+ member computer club. We recently decided to set up a classroom trial of Windows 7 for the next year using 17 computers, all about 4 1/2 years old. (8 wireless, 9 wired - all connected a 6 year old Belkin wireless"G" router.

I expected to encounter difficulties with more than 5 or 10 PC's, especially since my networking experience is minimal. I was pleasantly suprised to get the networking setup working well in an afternoon!

Setting up the network should never be a problem. The only problem I could see is if to many PC's are connected at the same time.

Or....

are you guys just talking about getting internet connection?

win 7 limit to connecting computers

I have been using win 98 since, well ,1998. Win 98 is my server and i have 28 computets connected to my server with about 10 neteork switches branced all over the place. This is in my classroom by the way. I purchased win xp when it came out only to find out that it limits the number of computets that can be connected in an intranet. Yes i spelled intranet not internet. My computers are not connected to the internet. The data or lessons work etc that i want students to do is on my server win98 computer. I was recently informed win xp pro can connect 10 computers at a time. I am curious about win 7 also. I upgraded my computer with a better processor and motherboard but am not taking advantage of its speed because win98 was 10 years prior to this tech. I alsowonder if win 7 is limited to 5 or 10 computers like win xp was. Many networking so called experts say an unlimited number of computers can be connected but i dont think they understand how the connections can be limited in an intranet. There really isnt many comments or anyone who seems to be able to answer this question knowledgeably without making an ignorant comment like a million can be connected. Of course, millions of computets can be connected at one time, but how many computers can access information off of a win7 computer simultaneosly? Its 2013 and im still using 98 because it was not limited to 5 or 10 computers like xp.

The Windows 7 limit is based on the number of files (PCs) allowed in the Homegroup folder. This number is specifically noted as 2^32 -1 under NTFS. To answer your question, only one PC request is handled at a time since that is the limit in the packet handler of the communications channel. Technically, simultaneous access is impossible.

◦Maximum number of files on disk: 4,294,967,295
◦Maximum number of files in a single folder: 4,294,967,295
