Hi,
I am thinking about upgrading RAM on my HP p6221sc, from 4 GB to 8 GB. I am sensing lag when I play League of Legends or any other game and browse at the same time (generally doing mutiple things). I have checked on serveral forum treads, and some claim that this model is hardwired use only 4GB RAM, while other say that it is possible to upgrade to 8GB RAM. Please help me :D:geek:

These two sites claim that my computer model and motherboard can only have 8GB RAM:

Thanks for the reply =)

How can I see if it is Narra 6 or 3?
Underneath the model number it says "Rev: 6.01". That means I got Narra 6 and I can get upto 8GB RAM? :)

You're welcome. Just keep in mind it only supports DDR2 and check the frequencies for the the type of RAM you're buying.

Edit 9/8/2016: Originally I thought the P2221sc computer can only handle up to 4Gb of RAM and not 8Gb. Looks like the M2N68-LA Narra6 board in that computer can handle 2x4Gb RAM sticks that totals 8Gb. And here's the new link to the specs of the M2N68-LA Narra6 board. The HP and Crucial RAM web sites seem to be wrong (and misleading) on the max amount of RAM as noted in this HP forum thread.

You're welcome. Just keep in mind it only supports DDR2 and check the frequencies for the the type of RAM you're buying.

The M2N68-LA Narra6 board uses DDR3 RAM chips, not DDR2 chips. There's a physical difference between the DDR2 & DDR3 chips and the "notches" are placed in slightly different places between the two. And older "revisions" of the M2N68-LA boards (like Narra5, Narra3 & earlier) use DDR2 memory chips.

Actually Max Support Ram Is 16GB

I know this post is old, but for anyone searching in the future the max supported ram for the narra6 is 16GB though I do believe I read you had to have windows 7 professional or windows 10 professional to unlock the 16GB... I could be wrong on this.

16GB on a narra6 = Mind Blown!

well, you did not say which version of the M2N68-LA board that you are using, zoziano.
do you have Narra3 (REV 3.02), Narra5 (REV 5.00) or Narra6 (REV 6.00 or higher)?

zerodegrees536 is using M2N68-LA board revision 6.00 (Narra6), which uses DDR3 RAM sticks and seems to handle 16Gb of RAM on his computer.

Narra5, Narra3 & older versions of M2N68-LA use DDR2 RAM chips instead

I, on the other hand, am using M2N68-LA board revision 3.02 (Narra3) [HP part # 5189-1661] on HP Pavilion m8417c, which uses the older DDR2 RAM chips but can handle up to 8Gb of RAM (currently I have two 2Gb DDR2 Crucial and two 1Gb DDR2 Samsung RAM sticks for a total of 6Gb - I may replace the two Samsung brand RAM chips with another pair of two 2Gb Crucial memory chips later on to increase the total of 8 gigs - my board has four DDR2 RAM slots)

the newer M2N68-LA Narra5 and Narra6 boards have only two RAM slots but can use higher capacity RAM sticks

-see attached pic on the CPU-Z report I have

a follow up on this - a few weeks ago I purchased an HP M2N68-LA Narra6 board (pn 612501-001) to replace the Narra3 board - and also ordered a pair of Crucial 4Gb DDR3 RAM sticks and they worked great. though running the CPU-Z app identifies the Narra6 board as 2A99

8gb RAM works fine even on Windows 7 Home Premium x64 (maybe even 16Gb) - see attached pic
just need to be running a 64bit version of Windows to access more than 4Gb of RAM

Nice!

I picked an HP computer from the dump. It has the M2N68-LA v6.02 motherboard, I replaced the VRM capacitors and it comes to live! I have flickering on the screen with the internal display adapter when I move the mouse or the keyboard.
Well, I'm trying to show a challenge on my YT channel, so I'm researching about the top upgradeable of this machine, becouse it cames with a really interesting GPU pluged in the PCI (Nvidia GTS450 1GB DDR5) wich is enought for some fun.
It comes with the useless amount of 2+1 GB of RAM and Anthlon II X2 250 @ 3GHz, not good for multithread software.
I'm looking for the best phenom ii on Aliexpress, but I was reading about the top amount of RAM, HP has recently remove this model from the support web...
Are any recomended stick for reaching the 16GB of ram without loose too much money?
I've seen you have the b97 CPU... I'm looking for the Phenom ii x4 945...
Can you recommend anything about my upgrade?
thank you!

Here are the upper RAM limits for the different editions of Windows 7:

  • Starter: 8GB
  • Home Basic: 8GB
  • Home Premium: 16GB
  • Professional: 192GB
  • Enterprise: 192GB
  • Ultimate: 192GB
I think they mean that windows home basic don't allow to go upper 8GB.
