There is a down side. I can barely see the paint on the keys anymore. I have been behind a keyboard since the IBM Selectric, and I still type with two fingers. I need the paint.

Well, I do spacebar with either thumb. And 10-key by touch.

I found $10 in my case once. Don't know how that got there.

I just threw out my 28 year old beige Selectric while reconstructing my basement. I refused to learn to type 40 years ago 'cause "that's for secretaries" :sarc:. I paid this girl to keypunch my Fortran decks . Now I hunt & peck (& curse at myself) 12 hours a day . Too much later on I tried to learn - Mavis Beacon, Intellitype, you name it. NFG.

Oh, right, almost forgot. I change my motherboard every 12-15 months or so ...

I think it is because in early typewriters the keys (I mean this arm which stamped letter to the paper, don`t know how to say it in English) were moving back and forth, so most common letters where put different side of keyboard / printing mechanism to avoid collision?

Yes. The physical mechanism could not operate as fast the typist. The letter arrangment went through a few permutations before the current layout became standard. And no, I wasn't there.

FYI - Bell originally hired pre-teen boys as patchboard operators in central office exchanges. They were rude and impudent, so Bell replaced them with "women of good character". Hello, Central!

Finnish keyboard layout is normal QWERTY, like US. But German layout is called QWERTZ, because it is qwerty with one exception: letters Y and Z have switched place. So everytime I buy a new keyboard (or laptop) here, I have to start with digging Y and Z out and placing them where I`m used to see them, correspond with my Finnish kb-layout.
