Hey guys I think this can be done but am not sure how so am looking for some advice.

I have a HTPC which remains on and holds a bunch of media files. I have set up a home group so I can access those files from devices within my home network. I was wondering if there is a way to access these media files when away, using the HTPC as my personal cloud since it's always on. At the moment I would be looking to access and play the files from either an Android phone and/or Windows RT tablet for the most part.

If this is possible what is the simplest way to go about doing it? Thanks

Yes, this is possible. But be aware that many ISPs will not permit you to operate an Internet accessible server with a standard account. Check before proceeding.

Is this possible? yes
Is it a good solution to your problem? Probably not
Is is permitted by your ISP? Probably not.

What you would need to do is set up an Internet accessible server on your computer. There are a number of issues with this. A big one is that you ISP probably won't permit it on a standard account. If you are considering this you need to check. There are also some security issues. And there is more. I never meant to suggest this as a practical solution, only that it was possible.

Most people would use one of the free cloud server solutions such as those here:
Google Drive is not for everyone, so try these alternatives | Internet & Media - CNET News

If one of them meets your needs it will be much simpler than setting up your own server.

Thanks for the response, I use cloud services now. But obviously with upload times and storage constrictions it would be much easier to access everything on my HTPC. Was hoping there would be an easy way to do it.
