How to change/delete 'contributing artists' on music files.

I've been trying to figure out how to delete and change some of the file information for various music tracks. I'm the kind of person who likes everything perfectly organised. As an example of my problem, for some of my album titles, it says the names of the singers instead of the names of the band. (I know! A disaster! :P) But it really grinds on me anyway when I search for something that's not the artist under artist.

I saw an old post on here with the following advice, only the post is over 800 days old and it advised me to start a new thread. I quote Bakoro, the person who responded on the old thread:

'First of all, yes, this in an old old post, BUT it is the #2 thread to pop up on Google when I typed in "how to clear property for contributing artist".
Therefore, for good of all the people in the world that have asked and been told to "Google it", here is the answer.

1.Highlight all the files that you wish to clear any sort of meta data from.
2.Right click and go to properties.
3.Click on the Details tab.
4.At the bottom of the Details tab, there is something that says "Remove Properties and Personal Information. Click on it. Don't worry it won't ruin anything.
5. A new panel will pop up, click on the second bubble option and BAM, you can select all the info that you want to clear for all those 93GB of music that were ruining your MP3 player artist lists or album lists or what ever.

You're welcome random internet person. Please enjoy the rest of the internet.'

I've tried doing this, but I encounter a problem. I've uploaded a screenshot of what I am seeing. It basically says that the files are 'read only' therefore I cannot remove properties and personal information; when clearly the files are not set to 'read only.'

Any ideas please? I'd really appreciate it! :picnic:

Thank you <3 xxx

The easiest way to manage this type of thing is with a "tagging" program. There are a lot of them, but mp3tag is a long time favorite and often regarded as the gold standard. It's free, from here:

Mp3tag - the universal Tag Editor (ID3v2, MP4, OGG, FLAC, ...)

You can work on 1 file at a time or thousands. It's very thorough and well laid out.

I'm only interested in file name, artist, and song title. My mp3s are named like this:

Elvis Presley - Mystery Train.mp3

With mp3tag, I can quickly force the file name to match the artist and title tags, or vice versa. Saves many many hours.

You can delete all unwanted tags from thousands of files in a matter of minutes, if not seconds.

+1 on MP3tag. I saved a backup copy :) of most my vinyls and used the file name as the title tag. It took only seconds to do several hundred.
