How to change the number of pixels per column for optical drive "view

I've read here that Windows does not remember folder view settings for removable media once the media has been removed. I see that it does remember to make the file name column 80 pixels wide. Much of the time this is not enough to see the complete file names. I'm guessing this is set somewhere in the registry but have no idea where to find it. I'm reloading an external hard drive from backup dvd's and knowing how to do this could save me just a little bit of time. Thanks for any help, bob.

TweakGuides.com - Vista Annoyances Resolved

1. Constantly Changing Folder Views

A source of frustration for most any Vista user is the ever-changing view type for various folders in Windows Explorer. For example you may set your \Users\[username]\Downloads directory to display in Details view, however if you copy a picture, song or video into the directory, the next time you view its contents they may be displaying in Large Icons view. Even if you go back and change the view type, it may reset itself once again the next time you place a different file type in that directory.

It's a genuine issue, and one which doesn't have any logical explanation - fortunately it can be permanently resolved.

Solution

Open the Registry Editor - see the Windows Registry chapter of the TGTC if you don't know how to access, edit or navigate the Registry. Go to the following keys:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU]

Right-click on the Bags key in the left pane and select Delete, then do the same thing for BagMRU. This will remove most existing customizations for things like window sizes, positions and views. While still in the same place in the Registry Editor, you will need to manually recreate one of these keys with a new setting. Right-click on the following key in the left pane:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell]

Create a new key called Bags to replace the one you just deleted. Right-click on Bags, select New>Key and name this new key AllFolders. Right-click on AllFolders, select New>Key and name this new key Shell. The end result should look like this:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\ Windows\Shell\Bags\AllFolders\Shell]

Now left-click on the last Shell key and in the right pane right-click in an empty area and select New>String Value. Name this new string FolderType and once created, double-click on it and in the Value Data box you can set the default view which all folders will initially take (unless otherwise specified) by entering one of the following values:

NotSpecified
Contacts
Documents
Music
Pictures

For example if you enter Documents in the FolderType Value Data box (which I recommend), then all folders for which you do not manually set a view will default to the standard Documents folder view as you set it.

Now in Windows Explorer go to your \Users\[username]\ directory and for each of the main folder types under there (Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos), make sure that you set the view you wish, including things like choosing which columns to show and how wide they each are, the size of any icons/thumbnails, the way in which they are sorted, etc. As you make the changes, for each folder click the Organize button at the top of Windows Explorer, select 'Folder and Search Options', go to the View tab and click the 'Apply to Folders' button. This will set this view for all folders of that same type, and this method also means that should you copy files of any other type into a folder, it will not alter that folder's view settings - from now on the settings should remain exactly as you leave them.

Update: There is one more step which can help ensure these settings remain fixed. Go to the following key:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell]

Left-click on the Shell key and in the right pane, if you can see BagMRU Size then there is no need to undertake this step. If it isn't there however, right-click and select New>DWORD 32-bit Value and name it BagMRU Size. Now set this value to 10000 in Decimal view (or 2710 in Hexadecimal view).

I've used this solution for quite a while now without Vista once resetting or changing my folder views, so I can guarantee that it works if applied correctly. If you still find your folder views changing or resetting, or wish to conduct other forms of customization, see the Windows Explorer chapter of the TGTC for more details.

It will apply to all folder views, note warnings about backing up registry or better yet, have a System image before attempting.

Thanks much for the reply, A Guy. I didn't see it till I was kind of worn out for the day. Was hoping for something easy like change the 80 to something else. I'm going to give this a shot when I'm not so tired and get back asap. Just a quick thanks here for taking time out to help.

Found this, it's not a fix so much as a workaround, and assumes you want all folders to display the same. You'd have to test it on removable storage folders.

Find the folder with the largest file name.

In the column 'Name', right click and select "size column to fit"

If you then right click on the same column again and select 'More...' you will see that it shows the 'Width of column selected (in pixels)' and a number

If you then select 'Organize' + 'Folder & Search Options' + 'View' + 'Apply to all Folders' from the page you have just sized to fit column then it seems to work on all folders. It also seems to continue to work if you exit Windows Explorer and go into it again.

Source

Also, if you press Ctrl and the + keys it will resize the name column to fit the longest name.

OK. I've read through this several times and there are a few things that are unclear. If it's alright, I'd like to take them one at a time to make sure I don't go mucking around not sure of what I'm doing.

First thing is this: "Right-click on the Bags key in the left pane and select Delete, then do the same thing for BagMRU. This will remove most existing customizations for things like window sizes, positions and views."
Does that mean that all of the templates I've set up will be reset?

I'm unsure of templates? They are saying if you made folder view changes, then those will be reset. If that is what you mean, then yes, expect to lose your settings. Do you make System images? Complete images of your OS that can be restored if anything goes wrong? It is great insurance

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/73828-imaging-free-macrium.html

I personally use Acronis True Image to an internal backup hard drive. If you have system images, you can always restore to one if anything goes wrong. I have never restored a registry only backup, but Brink knows his stuff

Yes, Guy, I do make system images with Macrium. This is because I've found Win7 System Restore to be unreliable and I've never been able to restore the registry from a backup that I've made. Always some unspecified error.

Anyway, the writer of the article you quoted says, "Now in Windows Explorer go to your \Users\[username]\ directory and for each of the main folder types under there (Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos)"
I guess he's talking about My Documents, My Pictures etc.
I don't store anything in those folders and I don't think they're really folder types.
This is why I asked about the templates. Those folder types being:
General Items
Documents
Pictures
Music
Videos

I guess I'll try this as he says since I want All my folders to have the same view. That is, Details -File Name, Size and Date in that order. And I'll try setting the File Name field so that most file names will fit. Will report back.

I believe he means the content of the folders. Documents, Pictures, Music, or Videos. People will often have different views for each content type. Good luck, with a new Macrium image made before, worse comes to worse, you can just restore ;)

So these are the backup DVD's you mentioned in your 1st post? I assume it's because the folder structure is already set on the backup. Can't you restore the data, then use the method to set all folders view? Or I am missing what you mean works for everything but the optical (dvd/sd) drive?

Yes, Guy, when I insert the backup dvd's I mentioned after doing the registry alteration and setting my folder view for all other folders, the view is the same for the content on the disc as before the change. When you say restore the data, where do you mean? I've already reloaded all the data from the backup discs to the hard drive. So the reason for the OP is a little outdated now except for the fact that I still don't have control over some small thing.

Sorry, let me get this straight. You have reloaded all the data, then made the changes we have above to make all the views the same? It does not change the views on the data you reloaded only?

I am more then confused now. You are viewing the content on the disc? May I ask why? That content is not loaded, and will always have the same view as when you made the disc. I thought the discs were to restore the data?

I use DVDr's to backup the data on my hard drives. These discs last longer than the hard drives. So from time to time I have to use them to reload data. When I have to do this, I'd like (if possible) to have the details view of the disc in the optical drive configured the way I like.

Ahh, I see, that is entirely different. The disc view is not loaded into windows, or the registry, so the view will always be the same as when you created the disc. I can think of no way to change that, sorry :(

If you make the changes in windows, then when you make their backups, they should have the changes on the disc. Make a backup now, if the view settings are working, and you should see the views on the disc ;) If not, then the software only copies data, and not layout :(

Bummer, so viewing the discs will always have default view. It's possible even if folders are set to thumbnails, that when copied to disc, they will display details. When you do restore them to your PC, they should display the way you have set them again at least. I make my backups as windows images, to a 2nd internal HDD, so had never backed up to discs. Since it appears that my problem is with a third party app (Nero) and not Windows I guess we can call it a day for this one. I can try a different route with Nero and report back if that's OK. For anyone else wanting to know, that is.
