How to change the Target type within a desktop shortcut

Hello

I had created a shortcut for an application that I had just loaded on to my computer. I By accident I had picked the wrong application to "Opens with" and when I clicked ok the Target type also got set to the wrong file. I deleted it and tried to recreate it with the correct "Opens with" application but now the Target type is not correct so it does not work the way I would like it to. I was trying to follow this article

that shows me how to change a shortcuts Target type using the Group Policy Management Editor only my version of the Editor does not match what is shown in the article. I can not find the "Shortcuts" in my listing.

Is it possible to change the "Target Type" of a shortcut?

Hello Jenn, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It sounds like you changed the default program to be associated to open the file with.

You should be able to use "Open with" again to select the correct program to always open with.

Thanks for get your reply. I was able to change the "Opens with" to be the correct application but it has not changed the Target type. Is there a way to do that? I was hoping that the Group Policy Management Editor would be the way to go but I can not find the "Shortcuts" like it shows in this article

Could you post a screenshot of the shortcut's properties page with the "General" tab showing to see what the issue may be?

The "Target type" will only show what type of file the shortcut's "Target" file is.

Ok here is a doc with what the shortcut looks like on my new computer and the what they should look got that from my old computer. what I am looking to change is on the Shortcut tab in the shortcut properties.

Are you able to create a new shortcut from the file on the new computer to have it the way you wanted instead of trying to modify a copied over shortcut?

Yes I am able to create a new shortcut but it comes out with the wrong Target Type. The pics I uploaded show you what I get when I try to create a new shortcut on the new computer from with in the app I am trying to use. The Xmanager3 has a "shortcut" button, I have uploaded a pic of that. and when I click that it gives me the result in the first set of pics in the shortcut file.

The problem now is the Target type which is what I am trying to change. Just don't know how to do that.

I can create a working shortcut using the instructions you provided but it does not make the shortcut that I am looking for. From within Xmanager I can create a short cut that takes me directly to the ipaddress that I want to connect to. That is the part that has the wrong Target Type. I am hoping I can some how change the target type to match the first set of pics I has sent.

I am wondering if I uninstall the program all together would that remove any associations to that program as well so I can create the correct shortcuts?

Hello again,

So I uninstalled xmanager3 and reinstalled it but I get the save results the Target type is still set to XCAS when I need it set to Xstart session. I am guessing this is a registry setting somewhere I am just not that familiar with changing things in the registry.

Since this is a shortcut, see if downloading and merging the .reg file for the list .lnk (LNK) option in the tutorial below may help. It restores the default associations for shortcuts.

the file type I think I need is not in the list but I think I am better under standing what it is I need to do just not sure how to do it.

Using "Open with" on the .xrcmd file to choose Xmanager 3.0 as the default program should.

As a test, unassociate .xrcmd files using OPTION THREE below.

I was able to unassoicate the .xrcmd but when I try to do the open with I get this error. Hoping it can be fixed
