"Can not rename original file, Saving cancelled"

The Tutorial is great, and highly recommended,
but i had further problems, which i will address here,
and which i have now found solutions for:

My preference is to use the Resource Hacker option,
but there are some important points:

  • This must be carried out in SAFE MODE F8
  • Resource Hacker must be set as administrator
  • AND you must modify the file imageres.dll while still in the Windows\System32 Folder
My issues were

  • i could easily copy imageres.dll and save to desktop
  • i could create a new modified imageres.dll
  • but i couldn't copy it back in to the Windows\System32 Folder without getting an error permissions prompt saying i couldn't complete the copy.
  • and that i didn't have the correct permissions to delete out the imageres.dll file and save with a modified file.
  • When i did the alterations within the System32 Folder, i got the message "can not rename original file, saving cancelled"
Searching the net found these solutions for me:

  1. Make Resource Hacker (and any program) run automatically as administrator

    Select file/program and right click
    Click Properties
and Tick Run this program as an administrator

    attachment.php

    and APPLY+OK
  2. To resolve "can not rename original file, saving cancelled" and "cannot create file C:\windows\system32\imageres.dll"

    • IN THE SYSTEM 32 FOLDER
Right click on the file imageres.dll and click properties then click the Security tab up top
    • Click on to highlight Administrators
      attachment.php
    • Click the Advanced button
    • Click the Owner tab
Select yourself, then Change permissions, click the admin then click apply
    • Then click Permission tab
Select yourself, then the edit tab, tick Full control, then OK
    then click off Apply+OK, Apply+OK, Apply+OK,
    until you are out.
  3. NOW you can go about using Resource Hacker to modify imageres.dll in the System32 folder, without any rejections.
  4. and restart

I hope this solution finally brings an end to something that Microsoft should never have taken away from us: the Right to set our own sound files.
Microsoft is saying: this is Our program so we want you to use our own signature tune -

That there are so many threads on the net people asking How can they change this, would suggest, it's a restriction people don't like.
Why was it OK for older versions of Windows to have an option to change the Starup sound, but not Vista, onwards?

P.S. My first sortie changing out the imageres file using Bitdefender Shredder and a program called Eraser resulted in my Startup Welcome being corrupted, and being unable to display the Windows log-on screen.
If you suffer this, insert your original OS disc, set to run-at-bootup, and Select Repair OS without loss or change to any personal files.
(System restore or Restore to an earlier Successful working point, didn't have any effect)

Happy Startup !
