Trying to work uninstalling and installing Adobe Flash, spending days trying to figure this out as a last resort I clicked the red X. I then went to the start menu and put in uninstall. I was able to get it to go through without an error. I then installed Adobe Flash. What a relief. You can also exit by clicking File, then exit.

Hi and Welcome to the Forum
Don't fully understand your post! Were you trying to "Close" Adobe Flash Player or uninstall it? What red "X" did you click?
To uninstall follow this:
Uninstall Flash Player | Windows
But I see you then Installed Adobe Flash! Was there something wriong with the original installation?

Everytime I tried to install Adobe Flash Player it came back as an error saying I needed to close windows first. Looked all over online and saw other people had the same problem, frustrating getting the error all the time. Then clicked the red X upper right and closed the computer. Went into start and put installed adobe with no problems. This was just a post for people like me with this problem. I felt good it was easy to do and wasted all the time trying to figure it out.

Sorry I'm still confused. If you got a message saying you must close Windows first, then having done that you can't install anything. Windows must be running and you must at least see your desktop before you can install anything. Sorry but you can't close windows by clicking a red "X". if you close all open programs you will be back to your desktop. There is no red "X" on the desktop. There are two ways to close Windows from there.
One the right way is to click the start buton and choose "Shut Down" the other, the wwrong way, is to press and hold down your computer power button fo 5 seconds!

EDIT: Have just given a bit more thought to my post and realise that I must apologise to you for being what might appear very "Picky". That is truly not my intention. In fact I would congratulate you, as a new memeber to this Forum, for posting this issue with the idea of helping others! It's just that I can't quite understand what the problem was in the first place and how you solved it! Perhaps it's just me having a "thicky" day plus I'm getting old! :D

I think we have an issue here with the definition of "Windows"

There is the general usage of the word Windows to identify the operating system itself

there is also the usage of the word to relate to a number of open application windows, ie the plural of window

It is quite usual for an installer/Uninstaller or indeed any system oriented application to require the closing of any open windows which utilise files that are about to be modified or removed / replaced, this is normally stated as please close any / all / specific open windows, but of course this is not set in stone and applications may phrase this request in other ways.

Incidentally it's possible to close "windows" in a way, by closing the Explorer.exe process, which will remove the majority of user interactive controls (the taskbar being the main visual change), I have actually used this method quite often to negate the need to actually reboot the system where this is not practical.

Thank you for that Nigel. I think I am just having "one of those days" I've just put the washing in the machine and forgot to put the powder in! It's "me age". Think I'll go back to bed!:o
P.S. It was this bit that threw me
Then clicked the red X upper right and closed the computer.

Still one of the main points that has emerged from this is that it is not straighforward to uninstall Flash player. It is best to use the Adobe "Uninstaller" here:
Uninstall Flash Player | Windows
Same with most antivirus software, they nearly all have a dedicated uninstaller!

I am not trying to shut down, if I do that I can't download a program. My computer, acer has a red X top right to close the browser. That way I can then use start. This is getting too complicated, I just wanted to give my information.

Thank you for that Annie, I can understand what you mean by saying "This is getting complicated" but to be fair this is the first time you have mentioned closing a browser! All Windows programs have an "X" at the top right like this:
x.PNG
together with the Minimise and "Restore Down" buttons. It is nothing to do with the fact that you have an Acer machine! It is a standard feature of Windows Program interface. It's just the way you put it that confused us all and I have to say IMHO would confuse any newbies who were looking to solve the same problem you had.
