How to control WMD with an IR remote control

I have a couple universal remotes that say they will control a WMC. Both are standard IR remote controls. How or what do I need to get my CPU to accept the controls from the remote?

You need an IR receiver. You can buy them in Kits with selected Media Center Remotes. Also doing a Google search for USB IR receiver turns up quite a few results.

You will need to look out for driver support for your OS and Media Center integration. Pinnacle has a kit for around $30 that will work for Media Center. It includes a remote, but you will hard pressed to find a receiver by itself for much less that has good driver support.

I use the receiver that shipped with my Hauppauge 2250 tuner card. If you still need a tuner, that might be a good way to go.

I use DirecTV so a tuner would be wasted money as far as I can tell.

I found a couple IR receivers online that I will look into for windows 7 support, thanks for the info

The Multimedia Station E-Z is $20 give or take. Connects via USB and controls Media Center, Media Player, and actually, you can control your cursor to open / close any application. The software has a timer to turn on or shut down your pc.
