Hi all,

can anyone advise me, how should I disabled automatic opening after downloading in IE8 (default="save as" for all files)?

I found procedures for WXP/Vista, but in my OS (W7 Pro x86) does not work.

Thanks for reply in advance.

RK

Thanks Bill2, it worked. I had to create this registry key (...AttachmentExecute\{0002DF01-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}), because it didn't exist.

Automatic downloading RAR/ZIP/... files is history!:)

Read this. Its for Vista but should work for win7 also...

In Vista and in Win 7, I used this registry merge:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions]
"AlwaysPromptWhenDownload"=dword:00000001

Copy the 3 lines, paste, and save them in Notepad. Change the .txt extension to .reg. Double click the .reg file to merge with the registry.

I tried, but nothing changed. The "save as" option don't work again...even if I use an advice from Bill2.

There is no infiltration or any other issue on my computer.

Where can be a problem??

You should have gotten some warning about "are you sure you want..." (to modify the registry). If you did and then clicked "yes", the registry was changed so that you should be able to see the added key. Did you do that and can you see the key in the registry?

By the way, since you said "Thanks Bill2, it worked" I thought you no longer had a problem. I was merely presenting a simpler solution that worked for me, for the benefit of others reading this thread.

Hi roncerr,

1- yes, I have gotten this warning and I confirmed it, all right. But then nothing happened. I tried to restart too.

2- yes, You have right, I said thanks, but next morning, when I started IE, ZIP/RAR downloading was again without prompting, however.

I appreciate your advice. When I look into the registry, there is "AlwaysPromptWhenDownload" subkey, mergence finished successfully. But it has no effect through downloading in IE ...

Is the value data set to "1"?
What about other file types e.g. *.mp3

Yes, it is.

MP3-downloading passed ok.

Yes, it is.

MP3-downloading passed ok.

Now, if you change the value data from "1" to "0" it's possible the .mp3 file will open the default music player rather than give you the "save as" dialog so it can be downloaded without playing.

Yes, I get downloading dialog too. But with registry mergence I had to reinstall 7Zip yet.
Now when I change value in "AlwaysPromptWhenDownload", it approves correctly.

Many thanks.
