How to Disable Synaptics Features But Still Have a Touchpad

Windows 7 laptop (Lenovo) 64 bit.

I want to stop all the extra features of the Synaptics touchpad on my computer but still be able to use the pad as mute. I mean, I don't want the pointer to grab onto objects and open links or do anything unless I click on that object. I don't like all these new features and don't know how to stop the pointer from opening links. It also opens and closes apps. I went into the mouse properties and disabled all the features but the mouse still has a mind of its own. Is there any alternatives? I don't want to only use an external mouse as I often use the laptop sitting on a couch and a mouse is not convenient.

Synaptics Touchpad V7.2 on PS2.Port.

Problem solved. I thought I had disabled all the special features but have overlooked the ClickLock. This feature is so annoying, I don't know how it could be an asset.

Thanks.

Hi,
Yep mine shows as tap and drag and yes very annoying :)
Most you can adjust the tap sensitivity to heavy touch and never notice them.

OOPZ...maybe I was premature on stating this problem is solved. When I unchecked to lock feature, the problem cleared up but now after using my computer a bit longer, I'm having occasional issues as before, closing web pages, opening pages I didn't select (but the pointer moved over the link and opened pages I didn't select.

I'll try it for a few days and report back if I'm having problems still. I note that one of the thread links posted had temporary relief from this problem but then it started back up and I didn't see a final solution.

No, this is not a solved problem. When I disabled the lock feature, it was improved but about an hour later the problem erupted again. When I move the pointer across links, files, objects, it opens them without any action on my part. Not all the time, but much of the time. I disabled all the features in the mouse properties but something is still causing this problem. I am using a photo editing program and it is executing some procedures before I select it. And if I accidentally leave the pointer on a function like 'close,' it will automatically close it.

Any ideas on how to stop these issues?

Any help here? I've disabled all the special features and unchecked the LOCK feature and this pointer is still latching onto files and links, opening and closing pages, etc. I just want a dead touch pad, one that works like it did before they developed all this touch-screen technology. Are there any drivers available that will reset my touchpad/mouse to that environment?

Hi
Without seeing the options you have available it's any ones guess
You might try to go to Ease of access center/ Make the mouse easier to use and uncheck any about hovering over an item.

Otherwise you might be able to install the touch pad driver version I show on my first reply ?
Anything more open the touch pad settings and expand all options and start taking screen shots

See if anything about pinch zoom... is listed ?

I basically disabled everything connected to the touchpad/mouse. I do want my touchpad to work, but not by initiating any actions on its own. It is driving me bonkers. If I rest the mouse on an object, a link, a 'close page' icon, on an image in Flickr, it will automatically open or act on that link. Do you know specifically which mouse/touchpad features are causing this problem for me? No, I didn't try that driver. When I hovered over the link, the software opened it and I got a warning msg about that site being on a third party blacklist. Perhaps some of those drivers (not the one you pointed to) are loaded with other goodies. (Seems like a good place to infect others, if one is into that sort of nefarious actiities.) I am not savvy with this newer technology and was doing just fine until we entered the error of touch-screen technology. I do not have that technology on my computers. I read somewhere to uninstall the Synaptics software and let Windows use the default drivers for the touchpad, but that didn't work for me. It disabled the touchpad entirely and I had to plug in a mouse to gain access again to my computer.

I can't believe I am the one and only user who does not want this new technology...and using a mouse exclusively on this laptop won't work because I use it sometimes in situations where that wouldn't be practical.

I'm sorry I am not clearly identifying the issues here. Frankly, I am unfamiliar with this technology. All I want is to use my touchpad/mouse as I have for the past 20 years. I don't want it to open pages online as I pass the mouse over it or rest the pointer on the link for a few seconds. This problem is making searching online difficult because the focus is opening links that I don't touch and when I try to use the previous page button on my browser and it does not return to the page that I was just viewing.

I have the Synaptics Touchpad V7.2 on PS/2 Port.

On the Buttons tab, I unchecked the "Turn on ClickLock."

Device settings:

I turned off all features in these categories:

Scrolling
-Pinch Zoom
-Rotating

Pointing
-Sensitivity
-Momentum
-Edge Motion
-Pointing Enhancements
Tapping features
Application Gestures

I have checked and my computer reports that my mouse is working properly. I am wondering if the drivers might be corrupted because even though I have all these touchpad/mouse features disabled, my mouse activity is getting worse. Now I only need touch an object (like the + sign on the Synaptics settings...it opens the options almost immediately), and when I hit the backspace button on my keyboard, it is taking me off the page I am viewing. When I open a program from the taskbar, the mouse shuts it down immediately.

This is EXTREMELY annoying and making using this computer very difficult.

Can I use some generic drivers that just give me the most basic of functions with this touchpad? I can't work on this computer the way it is acting right now, and just using an external mouse is not an option due to the way I am using this computer.

I was wondering if there is a specific order that I should have used to disable the features listed above, and that by not doing so in a specific order somehow keeps certain features (like the pointer locking onto internet links and files) active?

I tried finding a Synaptics forum, but could not find one.

Am I the only person on this planet who just wants old fashion touchpad/mouse features with a mouse that doesn't do anything without me left clicking? :-o
