How to disable Systray icon "Safely remove hardware and eject media"?

In my Systray there is an icon "Safely remove hardware and eject media"
which did not exist in WinXP.

I guest this is for possible removing USB sticks from USB slots.

However I should be able to remove USB sticks by just plugging them out.
Per definition WinOS and hardware should be able to handle this automatically.

So I do not need this icon in Systray.

How can I hide this icon permanently from Systray?

If you right click on the arrow thing in your notification tray, you will see "customize notification icons."

From there, you should be able to set it to "hide icon and notifications"

That icon exists on every WinXP machine I've ever used. And, I wouldn't recommend just unplugging a USB stick without ejecting it first. You could lose data that way. I've also managed to kill a USB thumb drive by unplugging it without ejecting it first.

That icon has existed in the System Tray on Win machines since at least Win 2000. It is a good idea to use it to be sure all files are closed and all cached writes have been written to disk before pulling your USB stick.

You can disable write-caching on the removable drive which should allow you to remove the drive without the need to use the "Safely Remove" icon. See this tutorial.

As LiquidSnak pointed out you can customize that icon to "hide icon and notifications".

I can't tell you how many times I've set up for a conference and had someone bring me a corrupted flash drive they just "pulled out" instead of ejecting. In Windows 7, it takes two mouse clicks. Click once on the icon, click again on the drive from the pop-up list.

I have discovered a way to remove that icon, which involves the following steps:

1. Download Dud (Dud) and Replacer (Replacer).
2. Rename dud.exe to stobject.dll.
3. Give Ownership of the stobject.dll in \Windows\System32 to Administrators and give Full Permission to it.
4. Run Replacer to replace the original stobject.dll with the renamed dud.exe.
5. Restart the PC.
