How to do an install upgrade on a computer that will not start

My computer has a problem starting. MBR problem.
I'd like to do an installation that preserves everything.
Is it possible?

The computer will not start to do an "upgrade" repair. However I can remove the HD and attach it to a running computer. Can I use the running computer to do the upgrade install in the damaged hard drive and then put it back in the original computer?

I'm sorry, but you can only do a repair install from within the started OS, and not from within another OS either. :(

If you can give us some more details about your MBR problem, then hopefully one of us may be able to help fix it.

Have you already tried to do a startup repair? Sometimes it make take running it 3 times to fully work.

I tried the startup repair several times, now it will not even boot to the point that I can initiate the startup without the DVD.

I installed the hard drive in another computer and it found a virus in the MBR and cleaned it.
Now it can't boot to the point of repair and the only way to do a startup repair is with the DVD. It fails to fix it.

First put the Hd Drive back in the other PC, & backup all your files.
