We'd like to create a way to identify the version of a corporate image. What is the best way to go about this and be able to query this information remotely? A registry key? Text file? At this point we only use Symantec Ghost to create the images, but no easy way after the machine has been restored of which version of an image is being used.

Thanks!

Can't you jst rename the image file with the version name. In free Macrium you can do that.

The file name of the image is not the problem as I can tell the version # from that. I want to be able to tell what image version is on all the machines in the environment. We don't have SCCM or any other enterprise tools to always make sure each machine is at the same version.

I'd go with a registry key. Something like ABC_Image_Version where ABC are the corporate initials. Then set the value to the image version.

A txt file would also work.

That's kind of what I was thinking. I was also wanting to put it at HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/Current Version. Do you see an issue with that? I don't think any corruption could happen from that.

Thanks!

That should work. I tried it and was able to query it with reg query from a Elevated Command Prompt.

C:\Users\rrkurtz>reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion" /v ABC_Image_Version

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
ABC_Image_Version REG_SZ 1.2.3.4
