I would like to be able to unplug my printer without having to 'safely remove hardware' first. Currently, if I don't do this, the printer is liable to be renamed the next time that it's plugged in, meaning that I have to determine the current incarnation via 'Devices and Printers' and then select the corresponding device in the dropdown. It didn't used to be like this!
I think the answer lies in some sort of performance boost... some sort of caching of data that Windows does before sending it all in one go... is it possible to disable this for this specific device, while retaining it for things which may benefit (USB flash drives?)?

I do not have to do that for my Epson all in one or a Brother label printer that are USB connected. I can power either one off and there are no problems the next time I power it on. I have to use the Safely remove hardware function for my USB flash drive but that's all.

One thing I have noticed "that really bugs me" is if you plug a printer into a different USB port Windows will create a new instance of that printer. If I pull my tower out for maintenance and don't put all the USB cables back in their original ports I get a flurry of "New Hardware Found" messages. Other than that though I can turn my all in one off and on without having to use the safely eject hardware option.

I recon it is a bit annoying that each port have a new device detected...it loads hidden devices, for nothing. But unless you know which port you're using, then not changing them anymore, that will do.
Yes, it should be no worries to turn off your device that way.

Just use the power switch and turn off your printer, it can be unplugged anytime you want then. If the port thing bothers you so much then why not just buy a 4 port hub and plug it in then use 1port on the hub all the time, this gives you 3 more ports.
