How to find out the Wifi-onboard-chip manufacturer?

Assume I am sitting in front of an unknown/new computer which has a Wifi-chip on his motherboard.

How can I find out (from within Windows 7; not from manual) from which manufacturer this Wifi chip is (e.g.Intel)?

Is there a built-in info or do I need a 3rd party diagnostic tool?

Use Device manager.
Right click on the WiFi device and select properties.
The most important is the hardware ID. Put the mouse on the fist line , right click and copy.
Search the ID string on the internet for more information, drivers etc

Open a command prompt window and type
wmic nic get description, manufacturer
or
wmic nic get description, manufacturer, pnpdevice, productname

When you get the device ID from device manager, you can go to this site and see if its listed.

Trying both of those commands gives me an error something about wmic is unrecognized.

is the Windows Management Instrumenation service running?

Open services.msc
Look for the Windows Management Instrumenation Service.
The status should be Starated and Startup Type should be Automatic​
