Solved How to Install programs for one account only.

I know a thread like this was made in 2009, but when I try to access the html that shows me the step-by-step instructions, I'm told that I don't have the granted permissions to access it. As my thread title states, I want to Install a program and not have it installed on other accounts. The account I have now has administrative controls by the way.

Rootimentry instructions would safice, for I don't know my ### from my elbows when it comes to knowing around my computer.

Hi Shaggai, welcome to Seven Forums,

I think I saw somewhere that it has something to do with the fact that the downloaded program gets installed into the Public/Shared area [i.e. C:\Users\Public\Desktop]. If I understand your request correctly you could try changing it to just one user [Administrator for example] by moving the program to C:\Users\userid\Desktop.

Sorry if I wasn't courteous to reply back on time. I assumed this site was dead.

Sooooo,I have to drag the main program file from a shortcut, then transfer by dragging it to C:\Users\MyUsername\Desktop? By the way, I'm using a laptop, so does the shortcut name "Desktop" exist?

You can put a shortcut to a program in the location C:\Users\MyUsername\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu instead of C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu. The shortcut will then only show up in your start menu and no one else's but that wouldn't prevent users from from browsing to the application and running it directly. To my knowledge the only way to prevent that would be to modify the permissions for the application or the application folder to allow only administrators and system. However if you do that you risk "breaking" the application so I wouldn't recommend that. Since most users use shortcuts to access programs putting the shortcut under your start menu might be sufficient. If you do that you will also want to remove the shortcut from C:\Users\Public\Desktop if it is there.

To recap here are the folders:
C:\Users\MyUsername\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu - Your personal start menu.
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu - The public start menu accessible by all users.
C:\Users\MyUsername\Desktop - Your personal desktop.
C:\Users\Public\Desktop - The public desktop accessible by all users.
