Hi guys first post here, I'm kinda new to desktop PC's have always been a laptop user but decided to get a desktop a couple of months back so I can tinker and learn a bit while I do it :)

Ok so my PC has a 1TB HDD in place and although its fine I do like the idea of running a smaller (128GB) SSD for the system and a larger 4TB HDD for storage of data ect, I'm sure it's a faily common set up these days.

So I have bought the bits 4HDD, no problem here I can manage this fine.
I got a 128GB SSD and also a 2.5 to 3.5 bracket.

What i need advise on is getting the system installed on the new HDD, is it as simple as just unplugging the HDD thats in there now plugging in the new SSD putting the Win7 disc in the disk drive and away we go?

I did a little reading up and got plenty of conflicting information and it just left me more confused than when I started.

So I thought would join here and hopefully get a clear picture of what I need to do.

If someone would be kind enough to help please be aware I'm on my first ever PC for only a couple of months and I'm not that tech savvy haha, so feel free to write like you are talking to an idiot :)

Best Regards and I look forward to any reply's.

Jay

Welcome to SevenForums Jay,
Yes you can treat your fresh ssd just as you would any clean drive. Place the W7 CD in the drive and then install as normal.
When done just boot to bios and make sure your new ssd is either first in the boot order or second after the optical drive.

Thankyou for replying, I have read something about BIOS settings that need to be changed is this not correct? and also, I can do this with the new SSD right out the box or do I need to initialize it first?

Also you can reference many excellent tutorials here as well but really the computer, W7 and the ssd will take care of themselves. Do your updates as well and many choose smaller blocks of updates but here again I just let 'er rip as they say. The speed of this whole process is so much faster it makes it a joy to install Windows ! Again welcome.....

Take it right out of the box and place it in the rig, then as Windows starts it's install it will ask which drive you want to install to. You can also temporarily remove the sata cable from any other drives in the desktop to make this less confusing, then re-install sata cable once done.

In addition to Alan's excellent help and encouragement, if your SSD is large enough I'd keep everything on it, but if not you can move the User folders off to the HD by copying them there, then rightclick each to add to the related Library - Include a Folder - Windows 7 Forums then set that as the default folder using Library - Set Save Folder - Windows 7 Help Forums .

If that isn't to your liking you can move the actual Shell User folders that you use to the HD as you wish following User Folders - Change Default Location however you won't be able to use Windows 7 backup imaging since it will want to include the hard drive data partition deeming it a System partition since it has system files.

I would NOT move Program files off the SSD as this defeats the purpose of the faster speeds.

Feel free to ask back any questions. This tutorial compiles everything that works best in tens of thousands of installs we've helped with here since beta: Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

Hi,
Yeah there is something I wanted to check before I start attempting the transition tomorrow evening.
I'm guessing that my win7 disc doesn't have all drivers and things as I got a Club Driver CD a Gigabyte CD and a Wireless CD as well so guessing I'll need to run those after the main win7 disc is finished.

Also should I run into any issues can I just unplug the drive put my old one back in again and carry on until I figure it out?

Thanks for replying :-)

Yes, you can go back and forth between the drives after SSD install by booting your choice via the BIOS Boot Menu key. Set the SSD as first Drive to boot in BIOS. Trigger also the installation media this way to avoid problem if you use flash stick installer.

Please read how drivers are handled best in Win7 in the red portions of http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/181024-user-account-create.htmlhttp://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/181024-user-account-create.htmlClean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 as this is not XP, but the first driver-complete OS in the installer and via Windows Updates after installation. There normally are only a handful needing importing from the OEM device's Support Downloads webpage, not a driver disk that may be five years out of date.

Hi guys, just to let you know I have completed my transition :) Im now running from my SSD
It's was easier than expected thanks to some great advice from here.

I have hit 1 snag tho :(
Basically I can no longer connect to the internet via ethernet cable, Im on fine with wireless but for my PC I prefer to be Hard wired via ethernet...
I have downloaded the Realtek ethernet driver, installed it and rebooted but is still doesn't seem to want to work.
When I try to connect it tries to get me to put in a Username and Passord from my ISP, as far as I know I don't have one from them and certainly didnt require one when I took the PC out the box a couple of months ago....Any idea's?
Any help would be greatly received :)

Best regards Jay

If so then look on the bottom for its network name and password. If not there then you'll want to contact the service provider and get that information. It is odd that a wired connection is asking for this as normally the security situation is reversed wired no issue wireless you want to have a network name and password. Are you sure you are connected to your wireless network?

This is why it says to install connected via ethernet cable (only) in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
since it almost always starts up connected.

Now enable Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3) and watch for activity in the bottom right System Tray showing an animation of drivers loading. Click on it to monitor which drivers.

Then run all rounds of Important and Optional Windows Updates which will deliver the drivers Win7 wants - something you can do if connected wireless, so have you? There will also be performance updates required for making the drivers work correctly which patch many known hardware issues.

Hi Guys,

Not really sure what happened but it seems to be working fine via ethernet now, quite odd it wasn't working and then the next day after reading you're posts here I booted to take a look and it worked fine, strange but I'm happy enough with it now.

Really impressed with the SSD so far, super fast program loading times and boot times, I got my stopwatch out (sad I know) and timed a full reboot from pressing the button all thru shutting down and restarting and for the egg timer to disappear took 42sec's which included me inputting a password (and I'm not a fast typer) so really really pleased.

Thanks for all help and support here and I would recommend this upgrade to anyone :)

Best Regards

Jay

Are you running a Clean boot with only your AV and any sync starting with Windows in msconfig>Startup and >Services (after Hiding all MS Services). I have a 10 second boot on my SSD with a perfect install as compiled in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 and with no freeloaders starting with Windows.
