How to install Windows 98 after Windows 7?

I tried the THPC link, but it failed for me. When I tried to install Windows 98, I got errors saying that a non MS-DOS partition was found, and cancelled me out. When i chose delete files, obviously, it killed Windows 7 which was already installed. I followed the directions to a T, and every time the guide said something should say something, it did, as far as configuring a second partition on the C drive. There was one difference. Windows 7 disk manager had a space to select a hard drive letter when creating the FAT32 wn_98 partition. It was preselected for D, so i left it. The guide did not mention this screen.

Any ideas? Reinstalling Windows 7 as I type this.

Installing XP on modern hardware is often a serious challenge. Installing Windows 98 is going to be much more difficult and probably futile. Even if you did manage the feat you would find that hardly anything works. Microsoft does not have a time machine so was unable to include drivers on the install media for hardware that did not yet exist. Hardware manufacturers gave up on Windows 98 years ago so they won't have them either.

Do yourself a big favor and install Windows 98 on a virtual machine.

It is a Motorola radio programming computer. Older Motorola radios can only be programmed using DOS, with a REAL serial port, while newer radios are programmable only with Windows 7 32 bit. This install is on an old Dell 14", which is repalcing my older Dell 15" which had Windows XP and 98. I only need 98 to boot into DOS. I am currently considering attempting to just install DOS 7.1.

Do yourself a big favor and install Windows 98 on a virtual machine.

I concur - Windows 98 cannot work with modern cpu's, 8GB RAM etc. However, with VMware you can specify old hardware as used back in the day. Here's my spec for Windows 98 on VMware



In fact, I have the complete set of Windows on VM from Dos 6.2/Windows for Workgroups 3.11 to Windows 10. It's great to fire up the old OS's just to hear the start-up sounds !

I went ahead and installed DOS 7.1 from a CD ISO I burned. One command line to type, booted right back into Windows 7. EasyBCD to add DOS as a startup option, problem solved!

Strangely enough, when DOS boots, it says Windows98.

DOS 7.1 was never released as a stand alone product but as part of later versions of Windows 95 and Windows 98. It was natural to identify itself as Windows 98.

I don't think Motorola has made one way radios since the 30's or 40's.

They use old DOS RSS Radio Service Software, some of which will give a runtime error (or HIMEM error) if the processor is too fast, like faster than 286/386!
