How to let secondary internal HDD run permanently

Hey guys,

I was wondering, I just added another sata HDD to my desktop.

Is there anyway that I can set it to run ALL the time?
I don't like the idea that it's on standby and every time I want to access it it needs to start up again.

I don't understand what you mean by having it run all the time, is it in an external enclosure? I have my network drive on my desktop on all the time unless we will be having thunderstorms, I also have a network drive running off my router which is in 24/7/365 since I have a home network, perhaps one of these methods will be useful for your application.

No it is a second internal hdd, I installed it a few hours ago. If the hdd is inactive for a while it stops spinning and when I access it I can here it start spinning up and that causes a little lag.
It is a 1TB seagate barracuda.

So I was wondering if I can set it to keep spinning for as long as the pc is running.

You really dont want it to spin continually, it will reduce the life of the drive...

What Tews said is correct, I think you want to change your systems setting (Power Options in Control Panel, High Performance might be a start) and not allow the hard drive to go to sleep when inactive since this can be an issue on some systems.

Go to Control Panel-> Power Options, then click on "Change Plan Settings" for the plan you use. Then, click on "Change Advanced Power settings". In the window that opens, expand "hard disk" by clicking on the plus sign against it. Then click on the plus sign against "Turn hard disk after" and set it to "Never". Click on Apply, OK.

But yes, hard drives may wear out faster if they keep spinning all the time, although theres another theory that starting and stopping is worse. Instead of Never, you can also set another longish interval of choice.

Tnx alot for all the replys, the HDDs are all still under warranty so if anything goes wrong their is still a way out.
I have a old 40gig IDE which is been running for almost 7years now without problems.

I'll give the "power plan" a go, but nothing more serious then that.
