How to make IE ask when trying to store a bookmark

Whenever I try to save a bookmark, IE returns with an "Unable to create <bookmark>: Unspecified error". Apparently that's due to IE's protected mode. Can one tweak that somehow, so that either saving bookmarks is OK or that it simply asks (as Windows always does these days)?

Having to fire up a second instance of IE in admin mode, copying the URL over and then saving it from that instance is not only tedious, it's definitely not more secure!

I run IE8 in protected mode, but I don't have any problems saving bookmarks. It sounds like there's a permissions problem on the favorites folder, when IE8 has no permission to do squat when running in low integrity mode (protected mode). Try opening an elevated command prompt, navigating to your favorites directory, and entering this command:

icacls favorites /setintegritylevel (oi)(ci)low

That should give IE8 the ability to create shortcuts when in protected mode.

Bingo! The icacls command provided did it!

Thanks!

Did you do a fresh install of 7, or did you upgrade over Vista?

I had done a fresh install of 7 but I had copied my Favorites folder over from my earlier XP system and had then run "TakeOwnership" over the directory. Apparently that hadn't been sufficient...
