how to partition the disk

i have acer laptop with windows 7 home basic 64 bit os installed, onle one drive with 500 gb was created while installation, now i wants to split that disk into more parts how can i do, please some one help me..........

Hello waseemraza07 and welcome to Seven Forums.

You can shrink the existing 500GB partition down to a smaller size (let's say 200GB.) That will leave you 300GB of unallocated (unused) space. You could then create two additional partitions of 150GB each, or one partition of 200GB and another of 100GB, etc. Windows 7 lets you do this through Disk Management or Diskpart and this tutorial goes through the steps.

Or you could use a free tool called Partition Wizard. It's more powerful than the Windows 7 tools and lets you do more things.

   Warning

Before doing anything to your hard drive I strongly suggest creating a system image just in case anything goes wrong. You would then be able to restore your computer to the exact condition it was in before messing with the partitions.

If Disk Mgmt isn't sufficient to shrink and then Create New Partition or Volume then be sure to use the Partition Wizard bootable CD which will not fail, whereas all other Partition Managers except Disk Mgmt can and will fail - including the PW Home version.

As Lee wisely suggests, back up your files and image first.
