I want MP to play all my video files when I double click the file.
However, although WMP plays avi files perfectly, I can't assign this format to WMP.
Right clicking, open with..., nothing.
Browsing there for an exe there's wmplayer.exe but it's greyed out and nothing happens when I double click it to add it to the list of selectable programs.
Using W7 Ultimate.
Anyone?

AVI files are played perfectly, it dose not need any extra codec for it . What can you do to assign an avi with wmp is :

1 . Right click on an avi file , and select properties in the context menu .

2 . In the properties window, if the opens with is not WMP, Click on chance button .
2.jpg

3 . Now in the coming window , search for WMP ... first in recommended programs . If it is not there , search in other programs by clicking the down arrow, and if is still not there (a mere chance though), browse to C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe .

Hope it helps .

Pic2: Wmplayer.exe is greyed out- selecting it nevertheless leads to the Pic1 screen unchanged

I'm sure I don't need a codec, because Open with...Windows Media Player works perfectly...
I just need WMP to come up when double clicking on an avi file.
Have it set to Powerdvd right now but that's a slow program.
Prefer WMP...

Disregard the starter exe option, tried that but it's some internal starter.

In the right picture above you need to highlight wmplayer.exe which is 5 below the one you have highlighted!

Yes but it's greyed out as I pointed out.

Anyways, it's solved.
It's in the start menu/ search for standard (or maybe default in E versions of W7) programs / Mediaplayer /Let it handle all possible formats.

Good to hear the problem is solved but you will agree that looking at your screenshot it doesn't appear to be any different to the other lines above and below it, unless they are all greyed out, of course!;)

On my screen it definitely is.
Anyway, selecting the exe does not work.
Wish W7 wasn't so complicated in many respects...

If it was simple then there would not be any problems then we wouldn't all make such good friends on this Forum ;)
