How to problem shoot Lead from computer to tv

Sometimes when I plug in the 15 prong lead which connects computer to tv, it just doesn't connect. Then next time it will again. Often I like to connect them especially if I'm watching a movie so it's rather inconvenient when it won't connect.

What's interesting is that this is the first problem I've had in which I have no idea how to check or run a test. Does anyone have any clues on how I might go about checking what may be preventing the lead from connecting? It is sporadic as I said which in a way is even stranger.

According to Google your laptop has both VGA and HDMI TV out. If your TV has HDMI input have you tried using HDMI cable to connect your laptop and if it doesn't have it are you able to borrow another VGA cable or an HDMI cable and test it so as to see if it is a cable problem or something with your laptop that's causing it. Is there a particular way you connect it when it does work such as turning the TV on first then the laptop or the other way around

not positive but think it's a HDMI (it doesn't carry sound if that's a clue and there are 3 rows of 5 prongs which go into the
side of the laptop where the female 3 x 5 receptors is sited.)

yes, I've tried different combos ... usually it doesn't matter

what I notice is that when it works the computer screen goes off for a second or two (when I plug in) while it adjusts to
resolution of the tv. So this brief blackout is the positive signal I look for to know I'll be able to watch the computer on the larger screen.

Is it this cable VGA Cable or this one HDMI Cable

Sorry should have read the post more closely it must be VGA as HDMI does carry sound. Do you have to press any keys to sent the output from the computer to the TV and also you would obviously need to select the appropriate input on the TV

No other keystrokes needed .... I plug it in and after adjusting to resolution of TV, the TV shows my desktop.

If possible try to get your hands on another VGA cable and also test with an HDMI cable to ensure it's not a cable problem

Check that VGA cord that you're using for bent pins, etc... on both ends.

I will say, in the meantime, that HDMI is the way to go in terms of resolution and sound. It's also harder to bend or brake pins, seeing as HDMI plugs don't use pins...
