How to remove delete icons from taskbar notification

I installed a few apps yahoo IM for example. It installed a taskbar notification icon, but when I deleted the application and rebooted it still shows a choice in the Customized section of the Notification Area in the Menu.


I found a fix for this, not sure if its the best way but it works! SO I hope some of you will enjoy this!

Be Warened you need to regedit!

#1. Regedit to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

#2. Delete the entries for IconStreams and PastIconsStream. (close Regedit)

#3. CTRL + ALT + DEL Start taskmanger Find Explorer in the Processes tab and end the task

#4. While in Task Manager click file, New Task (RUN) and type explorer

#5. Reboot

#6. Your GHOST icons should be gone now, however your customized settings will also be gone so you will need to change them again.

Yup except you need to do the rest of the steps listed above..

Ummm - the reboot does the same as killing explorer and restarting it....

Lol - not killing the messenger - I think you had originally posted a question and while I was posting my response you edited your original post - or else I am getting old and did not actually see the steps you had listed.

Either way, your info is just as good as the info from the other site - so both are 'correct'.

Thanks Dude! I was having the same problem and did a search on Google to find your post. It worked perfectly. The key was as you said, the last few steps must be done or otherwise you cannot delete the errors...

Glad i helped you Greekunick, PS welcome to the forum. I wanted to let you all know I do tend to play around a lot and mess things up. SO I will be posting some how-to's as I live and learn on windows 7.

Worked like a charm. I had tried the registry editing and the reboot but it did not work until I stopped and ran explorer through Task manager. Well done and thanks

I guess two questions remain -

1) Why are they not removed in removal process?
2) Why are registry cleaners not picking this up?
