How to remove recent items from programs

I followed the tutorial here

but that's not necessarily what I need, I wanted to know if there was a way to turn off recent docs that can be viewed when highlighting on a certain program. For example, Paint in the screenshot.

Hello Andy,

Sorry, but you cannot stop programs from being added to the Recent Programs list with Recent Programs turned on. However, you can right click on a listed recent program and click on Remove from this list to remove it for now.

I am asking too as the topic title, how can I remove items from the startbar, BUT... >
I know, right-click, "Remove from this list". But it isn't work! It was working, I used this function many times, but something happened, because if I click on this function, nothing happen. I checked the proper settings (Start Menu Settings etc, and even the editing gpedit.msc Enable/Disable option) but everything is fine.
It should be work. But not.

What's wrong, what happened?

You might see if resetting these may be able to help. It will clear and reset all recent items though.

Also, I cannot able to "Pin this program to startbar", there is no such item from the popup window when I right click on an item in the startmenu recent programlist...

Zedman,

Can you post back a screenshot of the item with it's context menu showing that does not have the "Pin to Start Menu" option? This might be able to help determine what may be wrong with it.



For the Recents, try turning Recent Programs and Items off and apply, then turn them back up. This should also clear out all recents.

Thanks, yeah, I tried that option too, the list cleared out, but the problem still exists...

They look to be pinned to the Start Menu. What happens when you right-click on each of them in turn and select Remove from this list?

Zedman,

The "Pin to Start Menu" and "Pin to Taskbar" context menu items are often removed by mistake when the shortcut arrow overlay icon has been removed improperly using the XP method instead of the Vista/Windows 7 method. It may be affecting the "Remove from this list" context menu item as well. As a test to see if this may be the issue, restore the default shortcut arrow using either method in the tutorial below.

Hi Brink, I am back...

I've just recognized, that the "Pin to Startmenu" option is still missing from the context menu. Hmm, is there a registry "hack" to restore this option?

Hmm, ok.

You might see if doing a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated before this problem to see if it may be able to fix this for you.
