How to remove the "Open with" screen on desktop

This is my first posting here and I hope someone can advise me how to remove the screen that shows up on the desktop every time I boot up. I did find Brink's solution for removing the "Always use selected program" line of text, downloaded the fix and ran it. The screen, however, is still there (although the text is now gone.) I really want to get rid of the remainder but do not know what to do, nor how it got there in the first place.

Any help would be appreciated

Windows 7 Home Premium.

Many thanks

sorry I am not having much luck with this screenshot. I would suggest that the screenshot I am trying to upload is exactly the same as Brink's one where the instructions for "Open with - Add or remove "Always use selected program" is shown. His instructions have removed the text, "Always use the selected program" from the screen but leaves the rest in place. At the top left "Open with" is shown then a magnifying glass is shown followed by "Choose the program you want to use to open the file: File: 0

The box shows a list of programs in two columns, starting with Adobe Reader 9.4 top left, then I.E, followed by Notepad, Powerpoint Viewer, Windows Live Movie Maker, Windows Media Centre, then Windows Photo Viewer. Top right column has the following: News eSobi, IrfanView, Paint, SerifPhotoPlus SE, Windows Live Photo Gallery, Windows Media Player and finally, WordPad

I hope this is helpful and will enable you to identify and work out what I need to do to remove this screen from my desktop as it is not serving any useful function as far as I can see. It appears on booting up before I have opened any programs.

Many thanks

If this window is appearing at boot up you have some file not associated with a program wanting to start. Type msconfig in the start search and look at the Start Up tab to see if you recognise something out of place. Possibly you recently uninstalled something that windows "thinks" is still there. This shows the file in question is file 0? If it shows in msconfig uncheck the startup box.

Thank you Britton 30 for the solution, that annoying screen has now gone! It was, as you said, the only program showing a 0 in msconfig Startup. I tried to get a screen shot with ScreenHunter 5.1 Free version to illustrate my question but it would not work (although it had previously) The program in question was WisdomSoft, i.e ScreenHunter 5.1 Free. I then tried the snipping tool on Win.7 and that did work. I have learned something new today for which I thank you again. Perhaps I should uninstall ScreenHunter now. :D

Good to hear you have it solved. Yes I think you should dump the offending program, Windows 7 snip tool works very well.
PS> I had this same problem with a file that was named...Britton.

For screen captures there is aslo Faststone Capture, 5.3 is the last free version.

Thank you Britton 30 for suggesting Faststone Capture 5.3 free version in place of ScreenHunter. I have no idea why ScreenHunter failed me at the very time when I needed it most as I had used it earlier this year without problems. I will uninstall it though and use the snipping tool and also try Faststone Capture to see if it has any additional functions that might be useful.

Many thanks for the help, I had tried other work arounds previously all without success, sevenforums is a great place to look for help. :D
