How To Remove Unwanted Processes

I recently removed a Brother printer from my computer and removed the device in "Devices & Printers", but I've noticed that there are still a couple of Brother processes running when I look in Task Manager. How do I permanently remove these processes from starting up?

So far I've tried msconfig/startup but there are no entries for Brother. I've looked in "Programs and Features" but there are no programs by Brother to uninstall. I've downloaded and run the Brother removal tool but it didn't do it either and the processes still load up and run after every reboot. I can kill them in Task Manager but I would like a more permanent solution.

That;s because you did't uninstall it from Programs and Features.

Check startup programs in msconfig and disable any Brother programs...

If all else files, just delete the files from within safe mode

If you will not lose too many other programs, use system restore to go back to a date prior to installation.

Try RegHckrs suggestion first, look in add/remove files and see if there isn't a "Brother..." software package there to delete first. Just removing the printer from the printer device list doesn;t necessarily uninstall all the software.

If that doesn't work then use msconfig so travk and kill the programs.

SInce you x86 use revo uninstaller if the package is in add/remove programs.

@ reghakr, Tews, & fseal ... as I stated in my original post there are no programs to uninstall in "Programs and Features" and there are no start up items in msconfig related to Brother.

@ richc46 ... the printer was around a long time and predates any restore points.

@johnhoh ... won't that create problems at start up if some registry setting is looking for an executable that isn't there?

@ Frostmourne ... Thanks for that suggestion, I'll have a look at the Revo uninstaller and let you know how I made out.

Try tr-installing the printer, then downlaod Revo Uninstaller

Use this program to inunstal lthe Printer drivers and software, Look in Programs and Features first.

If it's not there, let us know

If all else fails, an excellent suggestion from Johnhoh - by creating a problem, you can pinpoint what's starting the processes.

Whenever you do something like this, just be sure you can get back to the staus quo ante - copy the files first and create an SR point and if appropriate, an image. These are just general troubleshooting procedures.

Revo Uninstaller didn't do it either.

Further investigation led to Autoruns for Windows which worked just great. It was able to locate the registry entries for the Brother auto starting processes and I was able to turn them off by simply unchecking the appropriate box.

Problem solved. Thanks to all for the suggestions.
