Brand new PC with Windows 7/32 pro SP1 on with following spec (Gigabute motherboard h55m-usb3, Intel I5 750 3.6 GHz cpu; 4gb Crucial RAM; Samsung 500GB Hdd; Samsung S223 DVDrw; OCZ 600w psu; Silverstone FP34 card reader. AVG 2011 free AV. BT ISP, connected via ethernet cable to Netgear router. No problems installing Windows 7/32, and installing Adobe, AVG, and Win 7 SP1 initially

Date on PC is correct. This is a wired network using the onboard nic. Started off by seeing security certificate errors. When trying a different router saw in the network and sharing centre that there was no connection to the internet, however strange as it seems I was connected and could do limited surfing, but couldn't for example download Itunes. I then noticed that the network was defined as public. No other PCs on the network now, but XP laptops have been able to connect to the net okay

I have been able to change this to work, but PC now won't see the router - when I enter ipconfig, I do not have any connectivity at all.

I have also tried using the netsh command to reset int ip and winsock which were okay but still no joy. Maybe I need to undertake things in a different order, perhaps while not connected?

I would really like to go back to starters amd start over, but while on wireless one can do this, there appears no easy way to reset the wired network settings back to original.

Any ideas?

addendum - additional status quo

1. When we click on change advanced sharing it says that Public is the current profile - how to change this?
2. If we click new connection/network and then connect to the internet it gives "broadband "PPPoE" as the only option - we are PPPoA?
3. Although I have limited internet connectivity I have no network map in the network & sharing centre - odd?

How is your setup?

Can you give us a little description on how your home network is setup?

What kind of router you are using... Make and Model

and a screen shot of what you are seeing on your screen when it comes to the PPPoE and PPPoA?

Are you using a Dial Up DSL service that you need PPPoE... If you have a router you can tell the router to keep the information so you never have to dial up on the computer again. The router will keep the connection alive like a cable modem.

thanks for tour reply,,,,,

Network sharing says there is NO network - and there is no map. So in fact I am unable to setup a network at all. although as I say I am able to see the router (ipconfig) and connect to the net but only in a limited way; settings for the Ralink nic appear to be as they should (tried uninstalling and re-installing) - all this is most contradictory!

I am using a Netgear DG834N router, other systems including another win 7, vista, and XP all connect fine via the ADSL ppoa standard - obviously no dial-up.

As I say there doesn't appear to be any way that I can set the networking aspects of win 7 back to defaults - I have been searching now for several hours.

As we are in need of getting this PC up and running, and because we could find no information anywhere on this particular error, we bit the bullit and decided to re-install Win 7.

However I do find ther Network Sharing centre has some issues, such as a facility to reset all settings back to basics.
