I know to access

Control Panel >> All Control Panel Items >> Windows Update >> View update history

And I can sort by the column "Status" to group "Pending" together :(

But is there a quck'n'dirty way  to get a short list prior to clicking

Start >> Shutdown w/updates

You could probably try looking at the pending.xml file, or the windowsupdate.log - but I've never tried, personally.

I'll try and remember to have a look-see when I fire up a VM over the weekend, and see what I can find.

.... incidentally, the 'Pending' status in the Windwos Update History doesn't mean that the patch is awaiting install - it means that the patch is partially installed already, and will finish installing at the next restart, whether you use the option or not.

The shutdown /update option is for updates that have downloaded but not started the install process yet.

Is it correct that pending updates is just waiting for a reboot so they can complete the install.

Yikes. My oversight. Although I knew about partial installation versus "pending completion", I have apparently overlooked being able to see these additional beasties.

So where would I see these items for review, or even altering / suspending their implementation ?
