How to set System Reserved size on clean install.

Hello everyone,

I'm currently running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. I have a 55gb Windows Partition and a 300mb System Reserved partition.

I'm going to do a clean install next week and I was wondering if I can set the System Reserved partition size during installation, so I don't have to alter the partitions after windows is installed?

Hope someone can advise on this?

Hi.

During clean install the system auto creates a 100mb system reserved "partition",so you don't need to do anything.

Have also in mind this,

The 100MB partition is a system partition and contains boot files.In windows Disk Manager will not allow you to remove this partition because removing this partition could cause the system to not boot.

In order to create your own SysReserved partition, prepartition using Partition Wizard and mark the SysReserved partition you create Active. Then direct install to C partition you've also created.

You'd also prepartition to avoid the SysReserved partition.

I would predefine an active, primary partition for C and install into that. Then you get no system reserved partition.

Another option is to move the bootmgr from the system reserved to C after the installation. Then you can delete the system reserved. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/209885-bootmgr-move-c-easybcd.html

I want to make sure it's set to 300mb as I had problems making image backups before and I keep my winre.wim file on my System Reserved partition too.

I agree with WHS, make 1 partition with Partition Wizard Bootable and set it active. You will have 1 partion C: and no system reserved will be created. Much easier for a system image in my opinion.

Hi AddRAM, I prefer to keep my system reserved partition to be honest. As I like the option of being able to reboot into WinRE from the drive instead of fishing through my DVD's. Plus I don't have a dual boot pc either and I don't use Bitlocker so it doesn't really cause me any issues.

FWIW: I prepare several machines for a non-profit prior to installation of windows 7 Pro. I attache the hard disks to another machine via a usb-sata connector cable. I then partition the drive (most are 160gigs) as a single hard disk. I create a primary partition and format the drive. Then when I disconnect it and put it in the new machine. I boot the windows 7 dvd and install windows 7 with a minimum of aggrivation. It does not create the 100meg partition and seems to work fine.

Hi Rich - It's easier to use free Partition Wizard bootable CD.

Burdus, you get WinRE on F8 with or without SysReserved but there's nothing wrong with having it and obviously MS feels it's important or they wouldn't have gone to the trouble. I see no downside and can takeit or leave it on any given install.

Hi theog. No my PC came pre-installed with Vista Utlimate.

When I installed W7 I completely wiped my hard drive and started fresh. I did get an O/S disk supplied with the pc but I've not used Vista again since I installed 7.
