Solved How to set up Outlook 2003 for proper interaction with Gmail IMAP?

I am having trouble instructing Outlook 2003 to work with Gmail using IMAP folders/labels, or perhaps I do not understand the workings of IMAP well enough (having previously used POP).

The default IMAP folder presentation is confusing in that it includes "BIN, Deleted Items, Deleted Messages and Trash" folders and "Spam, Junk and Junk Email" folders - which all sound respectively the same. I cannot find an indication of what will be sent where, and how to set up Outlook to send Drafts, Deleted, or Spam/Junk messages to the IMAP folders (rather than the Personal folders) so that I can pick these up on other computers (my laptop when away from home).

Can anybody assist or point me to an appropriate tutorial/help page?

My problem is not how to connect Outlook with IMAP folders; as is clear from my post, I have already set up the account with IMAP. However, I can find almost no way to control where IMAP messages are moved.

In Mozilla Thunderbird, for example, there are parameters one can set to determine where Deleted items are stored - the same for Junk and Drafts etc. The only parameter I can find with Outlook is 'whether to send a copy of Sent mail to the Personal Sent Mail folder'.

In Outlook using IMAP it appears to be that items which I delete from my inbox are marked with a strikethrough but never disappear from my inbox. Junk messages are managed the same way. Folders with ever-increasing struckthrough messages!

Thank you very much for your contribution: the Gmail separation certainly simplifies the presentation, although unfortunately it does not solve the strike-through messages which refuse to be fully deleted!
