How to set up wireless bridge/repeater?

My current set up: router Asus WL-520GU (tomato fw) with two desktop and laptop connecting wirelessly.

I just got panasonic blu-ray player for netflix connection. In order to make it works, of course it has to connect to internet. However, it is placed to different room from Asus router. I know I can run a cat-5 cable from router to the player but it will be a mess (over 100 ft long). The cost for panasonic adapter is $80. It's too expensive for an adapter.

Is there a way to get player runs wirelessly? I have a old linksys router (I don't think it supports DD-WRT). Can I use it as a wireless repeater/bridge? If yes, how to set it up.

If no, any other advices?

Just a quick Google and most say that the worst piece Linksys ever made... no alternative firmware for it and no it cannot work as a repeater!

Sorry! Sounds like you have to buy a repeater or wireless bridge...

That was your intention right? Plug in the bluray into a wireless AP with Cat5 cable and use the wireless AP as a bridge to the Asus wireless router in other end of the house, right?

Well, the good news is that there are plenty of good WRT54G's on ebay for cheap, and you can put DD-WRT on them to improve functionality!

I have a similar issue as RN09. I want to connect my Blue Ray to the internet without buying an expensive wireless adapter. I thought I could do it by using the Windows 7 Network Bridge feature. I would connect the Blue Ray to my wireless laptop via an ethernet connection. Is that feasible?

For streaming video you need wireless N, an old wireless G router converted to a bridge isn't going to cut it for video streaming. If you want a bridge/AP just purchase one, they are cheap and easy to set up.

If the OP really wants this to work right I'd go with the Dlink 1522, 2.4 or 5Ghz wireless N AP/bridge, they are cheap, work really well and are easy to set up with up too 300Mpbs, which I'm getting with mine. Streaming video works perfectly.

When set to bridge mode you would use it wirelessly and can plug your B/R player right into it, in fact it has 4 eithernet ports for use in bridge mode.

I wasn't thinking of video streaming, at least not initially (I will get a high bandwidth bridge repeater or powerline ethernet connection in that case). Right now I just need a low bandwidth connection for downloading firmware updates etc. I was hoping to use my wireless laptop for that, configured by the Windows 7 "bridge connection" feature. I have read a number of posts where I think people have tried to do this with varying success.

navkan, I'd read on the forum somewhere that people has successes connecting player to laptop via cat 5 cable.

My main purpose to use player is for streaming Netflix. Currently, my wireless router is in my boy's room. On BF I got good deal on another bluray player with build-in wifi ($70). And remove the current one in to my boy's room and run 5ft cable to it. It's ok for now.

Thanks. Since my post, I successfully linked an old laptop (a stand-in for my blu ray which will not be available until after Xmas) to the internet thru my primary wireless laptop using the Windows 7 bridge connection feature

I am sharing my entire collection of DVD rips with my entire household wirelessly and I also have a similar setup at 2 clients homes (all using 802.11g)... it works just fine!

However... I do agree that since the OP has to buy something that to future proof his network go with 802.11n!
