I need more info about yours system. Was it a clean install, or an upgrade?

yes sir it was a fresh install. i am running on win 7 64bit amd athlon 6400+ 3.2 ghz processor, 4gb ddr2 800 , 500gb WD sata hdd and 4870 vidcard.

After much reading I may have it. what firewall are you running?

i only have windows as a firewall

i dont have any 3rd party firewall installed and i also have a nod 32 ver. 4 antivirus installed

One Solution for Error Code 646

(11/21/09) - I have Vista (64bit version), and I was getting this error for three weeks myself. Thanks to one the suggestions below, I got it to work. The suggestion that worked for me was to "manually" install each update "individually". I could not use the windows automatic update feature. Here's what I did (BTW, I did not have to turn off my firewall to do this):

1) Went to Bing.Com
2) Typed in the exact name of the update as it was displayed on the Windows Update Screen (e.g. Security Update for Microsoft Office Excel (KB######)
3) Bing found the exact match to what I typed in on the Microsoft website
4) I clicked on the link
5) Selected "Download"
6) And Viola, it worked
7) I repeated this step four more times, and now I've successfully installed all five updates that I'd been trying to install for three weeks.
8) Thanks again to all of the tips people listed below, that was helpful and the "manual" update tip worked for me.

Hope this works for other people as well.

I had the same problem on windows 7, 64 bit and somewhere on this site I found the solution?


SOLUTION:
Just go to Bing.com and type in the update number . That is = KBXXXXXXX and display the page and CLICK on DOWNLOAD and manually install it. It seems to be only 4 or more updates that are failing with this error. Just use Windows update history and do the same for all failed updates, reboot and they will all be listed as successful.

It worked for me for about 4 or more failed updates.

Sorry about re-stating the solution above - this was my first entry on the forum and didn't think to look below at the "HOW TO SOLVE CODE 646" . Oh well, I verified that it does work.
