How to specify an IPv6 address for a DNS server?

I want to use an IPv6-only connection to Internet so I have to specify the Google public DNS as the DNS server. How can I do so? When entering an IPv6 address in the DNS server settings, it says "incorrect IP address".

Do you have a valid IPv6 address already assigned? If you only have a link local address and no default gateway assigned then DNS assignment could fail.

If you can provide a screenshot that can be more helpful!

Well, I figured out how to do this. I by mistake was messing up with the IPv4 properties rather rthan those of IPv6. Byt if to set up IPv6-only connection, I can only access Google, Wikipedia and some (not all) IPv6 testing sites!

Ahh fair enough, that was what I was thinking! :p

Yes, the IPv6 internet is currently quite bare at the moment... while most major sites will support it the smaller websites won't. It is still early days at the moment. Equally, who knows how populated Google's public DNS server is for IPv6. It may not be as good as other alternatives.

Hi there

Now I'm 100% Network ignorant so I'll defer to those who know -- If you do this how does that affect sites that still only use the OLD addresses.

Might be a silly question but I'm still curious and never too old to learn (I hope).

Cheers

It would fail. You can't access an IPv4 website without having an IPv4 address or some translator (NAT-PT) during the transit path. :geek:

Typically, most deployments these days will run dual stack devices where a device will have both an IPv4 and an IPv6 address. This way when DNS replies with either an IPv4 or IPv6 address access is still maintained.

Hope This Helps,
Josh :)
