Not double because the netbook only has 1 ram slot and if I remove that that makes 2GB not 4GB or 3GB.Well that doubles the ram and that sounds like the limit. For me the SSD without opening heavy applications only cuts down on power, noise and heat once the net is open, up and running. Stick with the ram and then push for a upgrade later to a i5 ultrabook on sale.
The largest I can go up to is 2GB of ram that is why I am confused, ram or ssd? I mean I guess I could try to get her to get a 64GB ssd but I think she would most perfer the 32GB. Tell me a straight answer is the 32GB enough or not for mozilla firefox+windows 7+hulu+utube+netflix.I think this is a good approach. RAM first and see what happens. 2GB should be plenty for Starter. The problem now is that you get too much paging. That really, really slows a system down.Respectfully I would do the larger and fastest supported ram the netbook will allow first. The SSD will boot. open programs and close faster but I would see if your sister notices enough speed improvement with just the ram. Use this ram/memory adviser to see what your sisters netbook will upgrade to:
DDR3, DDR2 and DDR RAM memory upgrades from Crucial.com
Regarding the SSD - recently they had 60GB OCZ SSDs on sale (at Newegg) for $38. They were refurbished but OCZ is a serious company and they are probably better than new. You just have to shop around.
But if you think your sis can live with 32GB, that's OK too. My wife lives with little disk space too. But she has all her files on 32GB USB sticks.

Ok, I'm having a "DOH!" moment. You machine is very similar to my last netbook. It was a good machine, for a netbook. I seem to remember mine already had 2GB RAM (odd, considering it was an XP machine). I retired it after a couple of years because the wires going through the hinge to the screen started going bad and I didn't feel like trying to replace them plus I was ready for a larger machine. I tried opening it up to get at the HDD so I could salvage the HDD (still have it; I used it for backing up the boot drive on my current desktop for a while) and wound up destroying the keyboard in the process (due to a classic case of failing to RTFM
). I would love to "meet" the eejits who designed that insane mess and have a little "talk" with them!
