To answer you, no it won't matter if you delete restore points or change the % back to whatever you want it. It will come back after a restart and fill that space again.
You can try:
- go to control panel-> programs and features -> Avast -> change
- remove the component NG.
- change % back to 10% (windows default) or whatever you like it
- restart
- check if % is what you set
- check restore points (seems this NG delete old restore points when run out of space)
- manually create a restore point if there are none
- open command prompt ->vssadmin list shadowstorage
- see how much space it takes.
You can also try uninstalling Grimefighter.

Gradually most everyone here stopped recommending Avast co-equally with MSE a few years ago when it bloated up, same as the case with AVG years before.

If you want a more aggressive free AV which doesn't cause problems I'd try Panda Cloud.

Thanks guys!

GoKay, I'll run through those steps when I'm back home tomorrow and see if that helps.

And Greg, if it keeps happening then I'll certainly look at other options. I agree that Avast has gradually become a lot more bloated over the last few years.

Update: Looks like you could be right about Avast. I also think that could be the cause of this too:

http://www.sevenforums.com/showthread.php?t=350408

I never keep my backups on my C Drive and was baffled when System Protection started growing and showing that error too.
And it definitely started around the time Avast was updated.

I've now uninstalled Avast NG (it was called Secure Virtual Machines in the newest update) and will keep an eye on it. I didn't have GrimeFighter installed.

Was reading some of the Avast forums and looks like they're working on an update for the NG service which doesn't rely on System Protection, it's supposed to be coming in the update around June/July.
