How to stop "Windows 10 could not be installed" notice

I tried upgrading from 7 to 10 a while ago and it wasn't successful, so I gave up on the upgrade and ran a clean install instead. That worked, but I'm having enough problems with 10 that I've reverted to 7.

Unfortunately, every time Windows tells me there are updates, when I open Windows Update I get the message "Windows 10 could not be installed" and the prompt to Try Again. When this appears, I have to check update history before I can get 7 to search for new updates.

How do I stop this notice from appearing? I installed GWX Control Panel, but while it does a good job of notifying me when MS tries to download 10 files again, it doesn't seem to have any effect on this notice.

I've tried searching here but didn't find any threads on this issue, and when I search online all I get are advice on how to get the upgrade to work.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Chris, :)

If you like, you could use the tutorial below to disable the "Upgrade to Windows 10" update to stop it from trying to install, and hopefully stop this.

Upgrade to Windows 10 Update - Enable or Disable in Windows 7 or 8.1 - Windows 10 Forums

Brink, thanks for that. I opened the Local Group Policy Editor and that item was not configured, so I set it to Enabled to Turn Off, in that wonderful backwards way MS has of approaching these things. I ran a check for updates and it came up clean. Since that item had not been configured, I'm hopeful that this will do the trick, but time will tell.

Hi,
You might also review your windows update settings and compare them with these,
Either way you would need to see the win-10 update and hide that update,
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/24376-windows-update-hide-restore-hidden-updates.html

Thanks, Thrash. I've always set Windows Update to notify me only, and I've always been on the lookout for the updates I don't want (including telemetry) because MS has a way of un-hiding hidden updates. That hasn't affected the "did not install" notice, though.

Glad we could help Chris. :)

I just checked and the "could not install Windows 10" message appeared again. However, when I closed Windows Update and opened it again, the message was gone, so I'm making headway.

I know I could get rid of it with a clean install of 7, but I'd really rather not do that. ;)

Using OPTION THREE in the tutorial below to completely reset Windows Update should be able to clear that failed update and stop this for you.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/91738-windows-update-reset.html

Thanks, but I've already cleared and reset Windows Update twice, and besides not solving the problem, each reset turned off System Restore, which was difficult to turn back on. I know some folks don't use the restore function, but it's saved my butt a few times.
