how to tell volume license

I need some help finding out whether or not a version of Office 2007 has a volume license or non-volume license.

Any ideas or places in the system I can look at to see either the key and what the volume keys look like or anything else?

Oh thanks THW, but the software is already installed. It is on a server and it is Office 2007 SP1, but I dont know how to tell if it has a volume license or if the software itself was dl'ed from a site with volume license

Then, in the right pane, there would be the dword values "product name" and "product name brand", both will read "Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007".

But I dont know what you mean by "downloaded from a site with volume license". Are you talking about piracy?

I asked the user directly, but have not gotten a response yet and wasn't sure if the user had installed from work or elsewhere.

Hi Thorsten,

Do you remember when you purchased what you bought? Here's some info that might help.

A volume license is an "upgrade License" for 5 PC's or more. When you purchase volume licensing, you will be asked if you want to purchase Software Assurance (SA). You also have to participate in a volume licensing program. There are many types of Volume License such as Open, License, Open Value, Select License, Select Plus, Enterprise Agreement, Enterprise Subscription. With the exception of select plus, they all expire after 2 to 3 years (but are renewable)

There are two solutions I know of to help you check:
1. Look at your original packaging next to the product Key for the three letters that give it all away. If you downloaded this will be in your receipt.
As far as I can remember there's Fully Packaged Product (FPP), Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and Media-less License Kit (MLK) and also the unlabeled Volume License Kit (VLK) the last won't be on any packaging.

2. Open Regedit and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall . Scroll for the keys until the display name reads Microsoft Office (and your version). you will find a key that is something like this
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{90120000-0011-0000-0000-00000000F0AE}
I've changed mine a little but you can see that it starts with 90120000. Here's the breakdown that will tell you if you have a volume license:

• The first digit refers to the release version (9=RTM, 4=Release Candidate 1, etc)
• The second digit refers to the release type (0=Volume License, 1=OEM or Retail, 2=Trial Version)
• etc etc

That should answer your questions, if it creates more, feel free to hit me back and I'll do my best to fill in the gaps.

You posted as I was still writing my reply . That one looks to be a volume license because the second digit is a zero.

EDIT: I should also mention that it you can volume license Professional or student releases as well, it need not be enterprise..... i guess you know this though

Hmm well then the one installed is a volume lisence, it has the same reg key setup 901.....

They both Read Proffesional 2007.....

I will have some more stuff to check. The software was not purchased by or for me, I am trying to help someone else out who is having an issue with word on a server.

If it helps, under that same key, theres one dword value called "ConvertToEdition" that reads "Microsoft Office professional 2007". Whatever that means.

Hmm... I will try to find the correct KB article for what I was saying and post it. I normally reference this stuff but this is from a class I gave over a year ago I didn't write it on my notes.... watch this space.

We were thinking the issue might be due to the license as it was seen in another issue. But I think it checks out. I appreciate all the help. I wish I could go into more detail, but it is work related.

I will post if we get the whole thing resolved, but this info helped greatly. It rules out on possible cause of the issue.

Perhaps the user used another volume license to install some extra office products such as VISIO, ONENOTE, or PUBLISHER. This would match the scenario (or what I know of it).

thanks Tim. I looked through the whole Uninstall regfiles and all of them were for 9012000 so all MS products installed are volume license.
I have some more things I will need to test. I appreciate all the digging and knowledge sharing.
