Hey I need to turn on the "Base Filtering Engine" on my laptop, as well as "IPsec Policy Agent" and "IKE and AuthIP IPsec Keyring Modules"

I opened cmd and ran services.msc to turn them on but BFE is missing completely. The other 2 are both there but when I click start they give a message saying...

Error 1075: The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion.

Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks in advance for any replies.

By the way I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit with MSE antivirus

Hi jhnjns32, welcome to 7F! :)

Have you recently had any episodes with any Viruses?

Have you looked in Services to see if Base Filtering Engine (BFE) populates the Services List?

Use this tutorial to go to http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2495-services-start-disable.html
You should find the Base Filtering Engine near the top of the list. follow the instructions to start the Service.

Black Viper's advice is to have the setting at Automatic (Started) Home Premium.

If you look under the dependencies tab for "IPsec Policy Agent" and "IKE and AuthIP IPsec Keyring Modules" you will find BFE listed as dependent, and that is why you received the error message. It is either Stopped or missing entirely.

If BFE is not listed in Services try a Restore point, SFC /scannow, or you may need to do a Repair Install.
If you have had a virus a restore point may not work, and your best bet would be a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html.

Hey Anak thanks for the reply.

My antivirus found trojans by the name of Win64/Sirefef.E , Win64/Sirefef.K and Win64/Sirefef.D

I've looked into services and BFE DOES NOT populate the list. I cannot find it on the services list.

Also "IPsec Policy Agent" and "IKE and AuthIP IPsec Keyring Modules" DO NOT have BFE listed as a dependency.

What would you recommend? Reinstall windows?

Again, thanks in advance.

Your welcome.

Let us not get ahead of ourselves here. ;)

You have found malware, but have not said if you have taken measures to eradicate them, and feel comfortable that you have a smooth running machine.

Have you used any of the on-line scanners like Eset On-line?
Free Online Virus Scan - Bitdefender Online Virus Scanner
Free Virus Scan - Free Antivirus Software | Norton Security Scan
Metascan Online | Free online file scanning with multiple antivirus engines

Once you are reasonably sure, try the http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html, and then the Restore Point.
After you do that, then we may have to consider the Repair Install.
If BFE is not listed in Services try a Restore point, SFC /scannow, or you may need to do a Repair Install.

I used Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to scan my system. It found a few files and quarantined them. My computer seems to be pretty stable now. My antivirus software isn't finding any more threats like it was before I installed malwarebytes.

I'll try the SFC /SCANNOW Command to see if it helps.

I forgot to mention that even if SFC does not find anything on the first pass, you should run it at least two more times. :o

I just had the same problem and found this while googling on trying to find out how to fix it. Corrine, thank you a lot :)

I've looked into services and BFE DOES NOT populate the list. I cannot find it on the services list.
Hi, jhnjns.

Please download RestoreBFE.exe from: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/MiniFixes/RestoreBFE.exe
Double-click on the downloaded file. It should only take a few seconds to run.
When complete, it will say .. "Done! Please check if BFE service is running now"

I have the same problem :/ I tried to download RestoreBFE.exe but got this error:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."

A little background with why I'm having these problems... I did have a run-in with a nasty re-directing virus. I was able to get it fixed (needed a little help from one of my more savvy friends), and since then I've been having BFE problems.

Please help!!!

I registered to thank you Corrine for the BFE restore program . . . and everyone else too. I read through everything, followed links, took advice that pertained, and BFE is working again. Thanks again.

Corrine has since been banned, so what is the more reliable solution FROM an ACTUAL Microsoft Community person or employeee?
I have restarted a machine that has been off since July 2012, and installed a new Liquid cooler. I did attempt a factory reset with the Reinstall DVD, but kept getting the file missing error:

Windows cannot install required files error 0x80070570
The file may be corrupt or missing.. Make sure all files required for installation are available and restart installation.

This from a DVD that was just opened after four years of storage. ????

I did uninstall AVG and ZoneAlarm, and do a System Restore, and ever since doing that the BFE service has vanished.
Currently running MalwareBytes again (results are clean) and SFC. SFC result:

"C:\Users\Paul James Chatman>SFC /SCANNOW

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of th
em.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log"

Redaing the log I see A LOT of this:

"Ignoring duplicate ownership for directory [l:102{51}]"\??\C:\...."

And this:

"33: Move File: Source = [l:226{113}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\Temp\PendingRenames\9d7ccd28f8d5d001300a00003c03fc17.$$_system32_nb-no_53b700d66b352886.cdf-ms", Destination = [l:138{69}]"\SystemRoot\WinSxS\FileMaps\$$_system32_nb-no_53b700d66b352886.cdf-ms""

Ending with this:

"2015-08-13 11:57:55, Info CSI 00000341 [SR] Repair complete

However, what this tells me is not clear. The BFE is still absent.
